Usain Bolt Edges Justin Gatlin to Retain World Championship in 100 Meters

The much anticipated showdown between Usain Bolt and Justin Gatlin at the IAAF Track and Field World Championships in Beijing on August 23rd lived up to the hype as Bolt edged Gatlin at the finish line, winning by 0.01 seconds and retaining his place as World Champion in the event. The Jamaican sprinter now has three world titles in the 100 meters, plus gold medals in the 2008 and 2012 Olympics. Gatlin, the Olympic Gold Medalist in the 2004 Olympics, lost in the 100 for the first time in two years.

Gatlin served a four year ban for doping from August 2006 to August 2010, and as such he remains a controversial figure to some. While he was on the podium during the awards ceremony, a spectator heckled Gatlin’s mother, and the sprinter pointed to him during the ceremony. However one feels about Gatlin or any other athlete, what kind of jackass gets in his mother’s face and heckles her?

Gatlin and Bolt will have another chance to face each other in the 200 meters later in these World Championships.
