Unsolicited Sinead Advice Mocked by Miley Cyrus

Sinead O'Connor and Miley Cyrus

Some well-meaning but unsolicited advice to Miley Cyrus has really gotten out of hand, to the point where Sinead O’Connor has threatened Cyrus with legal action if she does not apologize for her twitter response to the Irish songbird’s original “open letter” advice.

In Sinead’s first letter, she advised the Wonder Twerk that the music business “will prostitute you for all you are worth, and cleverly make you think it’s what YOU wanted and when you end up in rehab as a result of being prostituted, ‘they’ will be sunning themselves on their yachts in Antigua, which they bought by selling your body and you will find yourself very alone,” and strongly exhorted her to get better advisers.

Now, we are sure that Sinead felt she had a good reason to address the situation after Miley Cyrus told Rolling Stone that her look in the Wrecking Ball was inspired by Sinead. The 46-year-old Irish singer was not flattered by this form of imitation that included licking sledgehammers and total nudity while swinging around on a wrecking ball.

“Nothing but harm will come in the long run, from allowing yourself to be exploited, and it is absolutely NOT in ANY way an empowerment of yourself or any other young women, for you to send across the message that you are to be valued (even by you) more for your sexual appeal than your obvious talent,” Sinead warned “in the spirit of motherliness and with love.”

Still, her advice was unsolicited. And who doesn’t know that unsolicited advice is usually synonymous with unwelcome advice? Even when made in private. But when posted on the internet, well, fugeddabout it.

Miley Cyrus response on twitter was to tweet: “Before there was Amanda Bynes, there was…” accompanied by an image of tweets made by Sinead O’Connor during a really bad time in her life. Miley also posted a photo of Sinead ripping up a photo of the Pope from 1992. Well, Sinead was incensed at this disrespectful reaction to her well-meaning advice, and posted another open letter to Miley, demanding that the 23-year-old “We Can’t Stop” singer apologize for mocking mental illness and explaining her reason for ripping up the Pope’s picture, which was her means of protesting the Catholic Church sex scandal. “By mocking it you mock every child who suffered sexual abuse at the hands of priests and had it covered by the Vatican. You could really do with educating yourself, that is if you’re not too busy getting your tits out to read,” Sinead said, and went on to threaten Cyrus with legal action if she did not apologize for her mocking tweets.

Cyrus then responded that she did not have time to write an open letter but told Sinead to let her know in her next letter if she wanted to meet up and talk. Too late. Sinead pointed out that Miley had plenty of time to mock her first letter and post photos.

A lot of celebrities — Cher and Elton John are two of ’em — have felt the need lately to comment upon Miley and her various states of undress, that sledgehammer (ewww!) and the infamous VMA performance with the foam finger, so we don’t know why this one got so out of hand. We’re not big fans of Miley Cyrus either, but we dislike unsolicited advice a lot more.

Of course, Miley could have responded with a little more class, given the fact that Sinead is twice her age, or she could have chosen not to respond at all.
