U.S. Wins Both Men’s and Women’s 4 X 400 Relays at World Track Championships
The U.S. closed out a highly productive World Athletics Championships by winning both the Men’s and Women’s 4 X 400 relays on July 24th in Eugene, Oregon.
The men’s team of Elija Godwin, Michael Norman (the winner of the men’s 400 meters), Bryce Deadman, and Champion Allison easily took the Gold with a time of 2:56.17. Jamaica was 2nd at 2:58:58 and Belgium took the Bronze with a time of 2:28.72.
The women’s 4 X 400 team also blew away the competition in their event. The team of Talitha Diggs, Abby Steiner, Britton Wilson, and Sydney McLaughlin—winner of the 400m hurdles—ran the anchor leg. The U.S. women took the Gold Medal with a time of 3:20.74, as McLaughlin ran away from the field. Once again, Jamaica was second at 3:20.74. Great Britain too Bronze at 3:22.64.
Seven time Olympic Gold Medalist Allyson Felix, who had won a Bronze in the mixed relay earlier in the games in what was supposedly her final race of her career, was pressed back into service in the preliminary of this event. Although she didn’t race in the final, as a member of the team in the preliminary race, she won one final Gold to close out her career.
The U.S. was dominant in these Championships, winning 13 Gold, nine Silver, and 11 Bronze medals, for a total of 33. No one was even close; Jamaica, Ethiopia, and Kenya were next with 10 total each.
