The Toronto Blue Jays Have Cornered the Market on Sons of Major Leaguers

If you looked at the box score for the July 29th game between the Toronto Blue Jays and Kansas City Royals in Kansas City, you might think you were looking at a box score from say 1990s or early 2000s, at least on the Toronto side. At the top of the order was C. Biggio playing 2nd base. Craig Biggio played nearly 2000 games at 2nd base in his 20 year career with the Houston Astros and batted leadoff a lot. He’s also in the Hall of Fame. But this Biggio with the Blue Jays is Craig’s son Cavan Biggio. The 24 year old is in his first season in the big leagues.

Batting third was rookie Vladimir Guerrero, Jr., son of another Hall of Famer. And batting sixth was Bo Bichette, yet another rookie who is the son of a former major leaguer; in fact, this was Bo’s first big league game. Bo is the son of Dante Bichette, who isn’t in the Hall of Fame but had a very good 14 year career in the majors, ending with a .299 lifetime batting average. In 1995 when he was with the Colorado Rockies, Dante hit .340 and led the National League with 40 homers and led the majors with 128 RBIs.

In his first at bat in the majors, and with his parents in the stands, Dante hit a single. He finshed 1 for 4 on the night. Guerrero, Jr., who has been with the Jays since late April, was also 1 for 4 with a single. Biggio, who has been up with Toronto since late May, was the star of the game, with a go ahead solo home run in the eighth inning and a two run single in the ninth as the Jays won 7-3. Biggio finished 3 for 5 with three RBIs. We’re not sure how many times three sons of major league players who also play in the majors have each gotten hits in the same game while playing on the same team, let alone when all are rookies, but we bet it hasn’t happened too much.
