The Rich Keep Getting Richer
at least the really rich… according to a report recently released by OxFam, an international organization devoted to finding solutions to world poverty and injustice. Their report, entitled An Economy for the 1 Percent, claims that the 62 richest people in the world (based upon Forbes list of billionaires) have more money put together than the poorest half the world’s population.
Oxfam says that the wealth of the poorest half of the world’s population has fallen by a trillion dollars since 2010 while the wealth of the richest 62 has increased by more than half a trillion dollars to $1.76 trillion.
Mark Goldring, CEO of Oxfam Great Britain, says: “It is simply unacceptable…. World leaders’ concern about the escalating inequality crisis has so far not translated into concrete action to ensure that those at the bottom get their fair share of economic growth. In a world where one in nine people go to bed hungry every night we cannot afford to carry on giving the richest an ever bigger slice of the cake.”
The report was published ahead of the World Economic Forum that was held in Davos, Switzerland, which took place from January 20-23, 2016. The future impact of technology on industry was a big focus of this year’s meeting.
