Texans Defensive End J.J. Watt Would Like to Play Offense, Too
J.J. Watt of the Houston Texans was the 2012 Defensive Player of the Year in the NFL, leading the league in sacks with 20.5 and generally scaring the crap out of opposing quarterbacks far and wide. Now Watt would like to expand his horizons by playing some downs on offense, and is lobbying coach Gary Kubiak for some playing time on the opposite side of the line.
Kubiak is apprehensive about that, although he did indicate there may be a couple if instances where they could might utilize Watt on offense, such as in certain goal line schemes. We can understand Kubiak not wanting to put anymore wear and tear on his best defensive player than he already gets in a long NFL season, but we don’t think Watt wants to become an every down two way player. He just wants in on a little of the action, and feels he can help the team on offense.
To that, we say “Sure, why not?” Watt was drafted as a defensive end out of Wisconsin, but he started his college career as a tight end at Central Michigan before transferring to Wisconsin. At 6’5” tall and 289 pounds, and with the speed and athleticism he has, Watt would make an awesome tight end. The defense would have to respect him whether a pass was thrown to him or if he only acted as a decoy.
Watt has a supporter in quarterback Matt Schaub who said he was “definitely all for it”. We’re guessing Kubiak will be persuaded to try Watt on offenses in a few plays this season.
