TCM Auction includes Cowardly Lion Costume

… and the original piano from Casablanca that Sam played “As Time Goes By” on. These are just two highlights of the classic movie memorabilia Bonhams is auctioning off at the TCM Presents… There’s No Place Like Hollywood auction on Monday, November 24th in New York City.

It’s not the same piano as the one sold at Sotheby’s last December for $602K. That one was used in the flashback scene.

These are far from the only items from “The Wizard of Oz” and “Casablanca” and of course, it ain’t cheap. You’ll need to a grand or more just to pick up a Dooley Wilson signed autograph. A revised final screenplay will run somewhere between $10K and $15K, and the main entrance doors to Rick’s Café Américain are expected to fetch between $75K to $100K.

Bonhams said in a press release that Bert Lahr’s original Cowardly Lion costume “was worn by Bert Lahr in a number of iconic scenes, including when he first meets Dorothy and her friends along the Yellow Brick Road; as he sings the songs “If I Only Had the Nerve” and “If I Were King of the Forest”; when he skips down the Yellow Brick Road on the way to Oz; when he helps rescue Dorothy; when the Wicked Witch melts; when the Wizard awards him a medal for “conspicuous acts of bravery”; and when Dorothy clicks her heels together to return to her Kansas farm home.”

A blue gingham “test” dress and pinafore worn by Judy Garland as Dorothy during the pre-production period is listed at $200K-$300K.

There are also original costumes from Gone With the Wind (1939), Gilda (1946), Mogambo (1953), River of No Return (1954), North By Northwest (1959), Rosemary’s Baby (1968), The Towering Inferno (1974), Rooster Cogburn (1975), Pretty Woman (1990) and Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl (2003). The auction will also memorabilia from the comedy teams of Laurel & Hardy, Abbott & Costello and The Three Stooges; autographed posters and photographs of many legendary stars and more the 50 vintage movie posters from the private collection of TCM host Robert Osborne.
