Spain Wins Women’s World Cup
Spain won it’s first Women’s World Cup, defeating England 1-0 in the Final in Sydney, Australia. Olga Carmona scored the only goal of the game at 29 minutes into the first half. Carmona went on an emotional roller coaster ride from the joy of scoring a goal to win a championship to the depths of sadness; her father died within hours of the match.
Spain now has a total of two World Cup champions; while this was the first for the women, the Spanish men won in 2010. England continues to have no women’s World Cup champions; the men’s only champion was back in 1966. If you are looking way ahead to the next Women’s World Cup in 2027, the location will be announced in May of 2024. The next Men’s World Cup will take place in 2026. That one will be hosted jointly by Canada, Mexico, and the United States. Of course, the Olympics are next year, so you won’t have to wait too long to see the top national men’s and women’s soccer teams again.
