Seven Top 25 Teams Upset in College Basketball
February 4th was an Upset Saturday in College Basketball as seven teams in the Top 25 were beaten by lower ranked or unranked teams.
Despite a 33 point, 18 rebound performance from center Zach Edey, Purdue lost at #21 Indiana 79-74. The Hoosiers had a 15 point lead at halftime and held on to beat their cross state Big 10 rival. Trayce Jackson Davis scored 25 for Indiana.
In Blacksburg, Virginia, Virginia Tech’s Sean Pedulla led the way with 22 points as the Hokies beat #6 Virginia 74-38. Jayden Gardner scored 20 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for the Cavaliers.
In Manhattan, Kansas, the #10 Texas Longhorns fell behind by 14 points early, but came back to beat #7 Kansas State 69-66. Christian Bishop scored on a layup with 37 seconds left to give the Longhorns the lead with 39 seconds left.
This wasn’t the greatest day for Kansas teams. The #8 Kansas Jayhawks trailed by a dozen at halftime at #13 Iowa State and couldn’t catch the Cyclones, losing 68-53. Iowa State improved to 12-0 overall at home, and trails Texas by just one game in the Big 12 Conference standings.
Out west, perennial powerhouse Gonzaga finally has some competition in the West Coast Conference. #18 St. Mary’s hosted the #12 Bulldogs and emerged with a 78-70 overtime victory. St. Mary’s improved to 21-4 overall and is undefeated (10-0) in conference play, two games ahead of Gonzaga. The two will meet again on February 25th in Spokane to conclude the regular season.
In Stillwater, Oklahoma, unranked Oklahoma State led #15 TCU by 14 at halftime and by 19 in the second half before blowing that lead. TCU took a two point lead with 5:08 left before the Cowboys recovered to emerge as 79-73 winners. Kalib Boone led Oklahoma State with 25 points.
Finally, #23 Miami and #20 Clemson were locked in a tie at halftime at Clemson before the Hurricanes opened up a 12 point lead in the second half. The Tigers stormed back but Miami emerged with a 78-74 victory. Miami’s starting five all scored in double figures. Clemson remains at the top of the ACC standings at 10-3, but eight teams are within three games of first place, including the Hurricanes, who are just one game back.
