San Diego’s Dylan Cease Throws No Hitter

San Diego righthander Dylan Cease threw his first career no hitter on July 25th as the Padres blanked the Nationals 3-0 in Washington. It was just the second no hitter in Padres’ history, after Joe Musgroves’s blanking of the Texas Rangers on April 9th, 2021. This was also the second no hitter of the 2024 season; Ronel Blanco of the Houston Astros pitched one against the Toronto Blue Jays back on April 1st.

Cease struck out nine and walked three. The 28 year old is in his first season in San Diego after spending his first five years with the Chicago White Sox. Cease came close to a no hitter on September 3, 2022 with the Sox, giving up a single to Luis Arraez with two outs in the ninth in a win over the Minnesota Twins. Arraez and Cease are now teammates on the Padres. Cease improved to 10-8 with a 3.50 ERA. San Diego scored all three of its runs in the first inning. With the bases loaded, two outs, and a 3-2 count, Ha-Seong Kim drove in all three runners with a single.

San Diego improved to 55-50, in second place in the N.L. West, 7 ½ games behind the Los Angeles Dodgers. The Padres have a big three game set at Baltimore over the July 26-28 weekend. The Orioles are in first place in the A.L. East.
