Rookie Kyle Schwarber Hits two Home Runs as Cubs Keep Winning
By mid August, many major league teams with young players start to fade as the grind of the long season catches up with them. The Chicago Cubs are a young team, but they’re showing no signs of fading. On August 13th, they beat the Milwaukee Brewers 9-2 for their seventh straight victory and 14th win in their last 16 games.
Rookie third baseman Kris Bryant (23) has gotten a lot of attention, and deservedly so; he made the All Star team as a rookie and has 16 homers and 66 RBIs in 104 games. But another rookie is making some noise now too. His name is Kyle Schwarber, and he’s a 22 year old catcher. Schwarber hit two home runs in the win over the Brewers, going three for four, with two runs scored and four RBIs. In 31 games with the Cubs, Schwarber is hitting .330, with eight home runs, 25 RBis, a .621 slugging percentage and an OPS of 1.042.
The Cubs record of 65-48 would put them in first place in the other two National League divisions, but they are in third in the Central, with St. Louis Cardinals leading at 73-41, and the Pittsburgh Pirates second at 66-46. All three have a good chance of making the post season.
