Ray Donovan Recap: He Be Tight. He Be Mean.
Ray got his own digs in Manhattan and brought Lena out from L.A. In the third episode (11-11-18) of Ray Donovan’s Season 6 “He Be Tight. He Be Mean.” Mickey and Bunchy headed to New York with a little passenger and Mickey caught up with Darryl.
I need an apartment, an office, and a decent car too. ~ Ray Donovan
The episode began with Ray trying to get a hold of Bunchy, knowing that Bunchy has once again gotten himself in trouble with Mickey. His call went unanswered as Bunchy’s cell phone was on the side of some road. In the bar, Mac McGrath bought Ray a drink and told him that his guys are wrapping up the Mercer Street situation (the murders of Fetu and Vance, we assume). Ray asked Mac if he’s got anyone in the FBI to help him track down Mickey and Bunchy and Mac agreed to check into it.
Outside, Ray called Sam Winslow and gave her his itemized needs at the present time, including bringing Lena out to New York. Sam is only too happy to accommodate him, thrilled to have Ray back on board. Ray got back in shape at Terry’s gym.
New York is the heartbeat of America. ~ Anita Ward
Ray’s next assignment was to help Anita Ward get the jump on the other mayoral candidate, Ferrati, and what’s the best way to do that? Blackmail with a sex tape and pulling the race card, of course. (Well, at least it’s not murder again!) They got an old flame of Lena’s named Justine to seduce the debate moderator, John Crane. Ray showed Crane the video that would cost him his wife and kids if he didn’t introduce racial divide into the debate and call upon a guy named Cesar Martinez in the audience. Martinez used to be Ferrati’s driver. He stood up in the audience and said he often heard Ferrati denigrate minorities, with stereotypical remarks about Jews, Hispanics and blacks. “You often commented with surprise that I, an uneducated wetback from Guanajuato, was consistently ten minutes early to work,” Martinez continued and asked him how, with that history of racial bias, he could be the best candidate in a city as diverse as New York. Before Ferrati could react to this unexpected attack, Anita Ward jumped in with a warm welcome to one and all, “no matter your race, your religion, your sexual orientation, or your country of origin,” and even chastised Ferrati when he tried to get a defensive word in edgewise: “The time for interrupting women is over.”
Sam also told Ray about her “Mister Lucky” problems. Jay White, the film’s star, is creating problems with his method acting and other bad habits that he has picked up. Ray agreed to visit the set the next day and talk to his brother, Darryl.
A crooked log makes a good fire. ~ K’Lei Hughes
Daryll, meantime, had his hands full trying to deal with wildman Jay White, who was playing the prima donna and making up phony reasons why he can’t come out for his scenes when the real reason was his cocaine addiction that Parker was helping him out with. Jay was wreaking havoc on the film’s budget. When he finally deigned to shoot a scene, he got a nosebleed that had nothing to do with the script and everything to do with snorting lines. The next time Parker showed up with the goods, Daryll tried to stage an intervention and flushed the coke down a toilet in a nearby trailer. Instead of the pat on the back Daryll thought he deserved, Antoine informed him that he just cost them another 3 hours production time. Daryll told K’Lei Hughes how sorry he was that she had to get dressed for the scene and wait all that time for nothing. K’Lei explained to Darryl that the task before him is not to be the star’s enemy but to become his enabler. Daryll at least got that message and brought Jay some cocaine. Throughout this time, neither Daryll nor Jay noticed that Mickey was observing them both in the crowd of fans cheering for Jay.
Is that the way a son behaves? ~ Mickey Donovan
Before heading to New York, Mickey and Bunchy dropped by Teresa’s and Bunchy snatched up baby Maria. They ditched Bunchy’s car for a stolen one and ended up at Sandy’s house in Long Island, the one with the Irish flag. Sandy told Bunchy that she and Mickey grew up together. She married Bunchy’s Uncle Cormac two weeks before he was deployed to Vietnam. He died, she remarried and she and Mickey lost touch. Now she is going to help them get across the Canadian border by posing as Catholic clergy, bringing an orphan to a family in Montreal. Aside from the sexual innuendos the old girl kept laying on him, sexual abuse survivor Bunchy was extremely uncomfortable with putting on priestly garments to pose for his passport photo.
Mickey went out to get himself a gun and made his way to the movie set. He busted into the trailer where Jay was snorting coke and telling Daryll how he was a big-time producer now and a quarterback like Tom Brady. Mickey told Daryll that he is not his son and knocked him out with the butt of the gun. He knocked Jay White out and somehow managed to tie him up and smuggle him off the lot. Ray didn’t need the Feds to find Mickey. Mickey called him up and said “Hello Ray-Ray.”
Hoo boy! We knew that Mickey was going to go after Daryll and want to be paid for his script. Regardless of how Ray deals with that wily old fox, how is he going to deal with Bunchy? Ray has a lot more on his plate besides this and Anita Novak’s election. There’s also Mac’s problems. Ray had to save him from another firemen beating in this episode and you could just see that more Mac drama is on the way. Mac can’t seem to stay out of his own way.
