Phillies Hit Record Five Home Runs in Victory and Take a 2-1 Lead in World Series
If there is any lingering doubt that the Philadelphia Phillies weren’t a legitimate threat to win the World Series despite being the lowest National League seeded club, it should have been dispelled in Game 3. Philadelphia’s powerful bats came alive, and Phillies hitters blasted a World Series record five home runs off Houston starter Lance McCullers, Jr. while Phillies pitchers shut down the Astros for a 7-0 victory. Philadelphia took a 2-1 lead in the best of seven series.
All the home runs came in the first five innings, with Bryce Harper, Alec Bohn, Brandon Marsh, Kyle Schwarber, and Rhys Hoskins teeing off on McCullers. The Phillies credited familiarity with McCullers’ pitches for the home run output; the Phillies closed out the regular season with a three game set at Houston on October 3rd-5th. McCullers was the starter in the October 3rd game; he took the loss, but only gave up one run in six innings. This Phillies 3-0 victory clinched a post season berth for the club. (The Astros won the remaining two games of the series).
Harper is having an outstanding post season, hitting .382 with six homers and 13 RBIs along with six doubles, 12 runs scored, on base percentage of .414 and an OPS of 1.232 in 14 games. The Phillies have hit 22 home runs in the post season.
Game 4 is November 2nd in Philadelphia.
