Patriots Beat Rams in Lowest Scoring Super Bowl

For all the offensive firepower in the arsenals of the New England Patriots and Los Angeles Rams, Super Bowl LIII was all about the defenses. The Patriots had just enough offense to win their sixth Super Bowl, scoring 10 points in the fourth quarter to win 13-3.

The score was 3-3 going into the fourth quarter, and some observers were saying that Rams punter Johnny Hekker was the frontrunner for MVP. Hekker averaged46.3 yards on nine punts, including a Super Bowl record 65 yarder. In the end, New England WR Julian Edelman was voted the MVP on the basis of 10 catches for 141 yards. Rob Gronkowski also had some key receptions for the Patriots (6 catches for 87 yards) and Sony Michel rushed 18 times for 94 yards and the game’s only touchdown.

Neither quarterback had a particularly stellar performance; nonetheless, Tom Brady has now won six Super Bowls. Jared Goff was intercepted by Stephen Gilmore with 4:17 left to essentially seal the deal for New England.

Brady, who is 41, said before the game he’ll be returning. Gronkowski says he needs to think about it before deciding if he will return. Though the Patriots will no doubt have some losses due to retirements or free agency, one of the constants in the NFL is that the Patriots will continue to find ways to win.

Worst Super Bowl performance + lowest-scoring Super Bowl = Super Bowl in decline, and arguably, the WORST season of NFL yet.
