New York City and Berlin Marathons Canceled for 2020 Due to Covid-19

While some sports have or are taking steps to return amid the Covid-19 pandemic, others are still cancelling events. The latest casualties are the New York City Marathon and Berlin Marathon. The New York City Marathon had been scheduled for November 1st, while the Berlin Marathon had been set for September 27th. Earlier this year, the Boston Marathon was cancelled. All three events are scheduled to return in 2021.

Golf, NASCAR auto racing, and European soccer have returned with safety measures including having few or no fans in attendance, while Major League Baseball and the NBA are planning to return at the end of July; the NHL is also planning on having the Stanley Cup playoffs this summer. But as states open up, Covid-19 cases have increased dramatically. Some pro basketball and baseball players have tested positive for Covid-19 as training facilities have opened. Ultimately the virus will determine what comes back and for how long.

Here’s some highlights from last year’s New York City Marathon. The winners were Geoffrey Kamworor for the men, and Joyciline Jepkosgei, both of whom are from Kenya.
