National Treasure Wins Preakness; No Triple Crown Winner This Year
National Treasure, with 5-2 odds, won the 148th Preakness Stakes at Pimlico Race Track in Baltimore on May 20th. Mage, the 7-5 favorite and winner of the Kentucky Derby, finished third. Blazing Stevens was second. There were only seven horses in the race after an 18 horse field in the Derby. There will be no Triple Crown Winner this year.
National Treasure’s trainer is Bob Baffert, who just happens to be the last trainer to win a Triple Crown, with Justify in 2018 and before that, American Pharoah in 2015. Baffert returned to the Preakness after serving suspensions for multiple instances of doping his horses. The controversial trainer has now won a record eight Preaknesses.
The final race of the Triple Crown, the Belmont Stakes, will be held June 10th.
