Most Expensive Cities in the World in 2015

The Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) has released its report on the world’s most expensive places to live. It turns out that the Top 5 remained the same as in 2014: Singapore was No. 1, followed by Paris, Oslo, Zurich and Sydney.

The EIU’s uses New York City to compare costs of living in over 130 cities across the globe, checking the cost of “more than 400 individual prices across 160 products and services. These include food, drink, clothing, household supplies and personal care items, home rents, transport, utility bills, private schools, domestic help and recreational costs.food, clothing, gas, and much more.” The information is designed to assist large companies in coming up with cost-of-living allowances and compensation packages for expatriates and business travelers. You have to register on their website to obtain a copy of the free report. A much more in-depth report is available for $995.

Thisismoney.co.uk has some charts from the report, including the ten cheapest places to live. Karachi, Pakistan is the cheapest. Bangalore, India came in second, followed by Caracas, Venezuela. Mumbai and Chennai in India round out that Top 5.

Another chart shows that the price of a loaf of bread in Paris, the second most expensive city, is more than double that of Singapore. Wine in Paris, on the other hand, is roughly half of what they will charge you in Singapore, Sydney, Melbourne and Seoul.
