Minor Leaguer Hits Home Runs in Five Consecutive At Bats
Throughout history, minor league baseball has had players with some impressive statistics who just couldn’t make it in the big leagues. Some of course do make it big so it’s worth noting when there is a particularly outstanding performance. With that in mind, keep an eye on first baseman Jon Griffin of the Mobile BayBears, the Double A Southern League affiliate of the Arizona Diamondbacks. Griffin is a big 6’6” 230 pound 25 year old who played college baseball at Central Florida and has been in the Diamondback’s organization since 2011. Griffin hit five home runs in five consecutive at bats across two games on May 21st and 22nd.
Arizona currently has one of the best first baseman in the game in Paul Goldschmidt, and Griffin hasn’t yet played higher than Double A in his minor league career. The Diamondbacks should be set for a while at first with Goldschmidt, bad news for Giffrin. Griffin was hitting .285 with 10 homers and 28 RBIs after his five homer outburst, and has been hot as of late, period, hitting .429 with eight homers, 15 RBIs, an on base percentage of .512 with a slugging percentage of 1.143 over his last ten games. Those are the kinds of numbers that get the attention of scouts and general managers, and lead to trade inquiries, so it would not surprise us if Griffin was traded to another organization. Time will tell if Griffin is an emerging star or another minor league flame out.
