Mariners Pound Out Five Homers in Rout of Padres
The Seattle Mariners are developing a Murderers Row of power hitters, and it was on display in the Mariners’ 16-4 demolishing of the San Diego Padres in Seattle on May 31st. The Mariners had two home runs by Seth Smith, and one each from Kyle Seager, Franklin Gutierrez, and Adam Lind. The Mariners lead the major leagues with 77 home runs.
The Mariners have two other players who hit ‘em out of the park on a regular basis, too. Second baseman Robinson Cano is bouncing back from last year’s relatively off season; he has 15 homers and 45 RBIs, second in the American League in both categories. Designated hitter Nelson Cruz has 10 homers and 35 RBIs. The team has a healthy .442 slugging percentage and .774 OPS.
Seattle entered June just a half game behind the Texas Rangers in the American League West race. They’ll want to avoid things like getting swept at home by the Minnesota Twins, as they were this past weekend. But their 30-21 record is third best in the league behind the Rangers and Red Sox, and they play well on the road (18-7), so they’re worth keeping an eye on.
