Manny Pacquiao Announces His Retirement From Boxing
Boxing great Manny Pacquiao, the sport’s only eight division world title winner, announced his retirement on social media on September 29th, 2021. The 42 year old Filipino is one of the greatest boxers in history and retires with a record of 62-8-2 in professional bouts.
He began his pro career in the ring with a unanimous decision over another Filipino fighter, Edmund Enting Ignacio, on January 22nd, 1995. The future champ was just 16 years old. His final bout was a loss to Yordenis Ugas of Cuba in a unanimous decision on August 21st, 2021. In between, he beat 22 world champions. Despite all that, perhaps his best known match was a loss to Floyd Mayweather, a much anticipated fight that was years in the making. It finally happened on May 2nd, 2015 in Las Vegas, with Mayweather winning a 12 round unanimous decision.
Pacquiao has plenty to keep himself busy. He currently serves as a Senator in the Philippines senate, and recently announced he will be running for President of the country in the 2022 election.
