Joe Paterno—The Beer
The Duquesne Brewing Company announced June 22nd that it will be brewing a new craft beer at its Latrobe, Pennsylvania facility in honor of the late Joe Paterno, the long time Penn State football coach who lost his job in 2011 in the wake of the Jerry Sandusky child sex scandal. The cans will feature Joe’s picture and accomplishments, with a portion of the proceeds going to charities that the Paterno family supports. The new brew will roll out in August. No word on where it will be available, but craft beers typically have a limited distribution so we’re guessing you Penn State alumni outside of Pennsylvania won’t be seeing it at your local liquor store.
Paterno died in 2012 after losing his job and 111 of his 409 career victories as part of the NCAA’s punishment of Paterno and Penn State after the Sandusky scandal rocked the country. However, this beer is the latest event in the restoration of Paterno’s reputation. Earlier this year, the NCAA restored those 111 victories, once again making Paterno the winningest Division I football coach in history, and it was recently announced that he had been selected for induction this fall into the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame.
