Jamie Moyer Becomes the Oldest Pitcher to Win a Major League Game

The Colorado Rockies’ Jamie Moyer made history on April 17th when he became the oldest pitcher to ever win a Major League game as Colorado beat the San Diego Padres 5-3.  Moyer, who was 49 years 150 days old that day, broke Jack Quinn’s record by 70 days.  Quinn’s last win was in 1932; he retired in 1933 at age 50. It was the 268th victory of Moyer’s career, which dates back to 1986.

It looked like Moyer’s career was over after the 2010 season, when he had ligament replacement surgery.  He didn’t pitch in 2011, and it was assumed he was done at age 48, which is downright geezerly for a big league ball player.  But the Rockies gave him another chance, and he made the roster for 2012. Colorado is Moyer’s eighth big league team.  With that reconditioned arm of his, who knows how much longer he’ll be playing?  When he finally is finished, he should have some serious consideration for the Hall of Fame with his victory total.
