Houston Beats Memphis on Last Second Three Pointer
The Houston Cougars have very quietly been playing some of the best college basketball in the country this season. The ninth ranked Cougars were 20-3 overall and 13-3 in the American Athletic Conference when they hosted Memphis (15-6, 11-3) in their regular season finale on March 7th. Houston had won its last three games by an average of 36 points, but the Tigers are a pretty good team this year too, as their record indicates.
Early on, the Tigers gave notice that they were no pushovers, and the score remained close throughout the game with several lead changes. Memphis tied the score at 64-64 with a three point basket with 1.7 seconds left. But Houston freshman Tramon Mark answered with a three pointer himself as time expired to give the Cougars a 67-64 victory.
The Cougars will be the #2 seed in the AAC tournament and play the winner of the Tulsa-Tulane game March 12th. The top seed in the tournament is Wichita State. The unranked Shockers (15-4 overall, 11-2 in the AAC) are the regular season champs on the basis of a higher winning percentage in conference games in this Covid marred season. The Cougars and Shockers split two games this season, and Houston’s last loss was at Wichita State February 18th.
