Gerrit Cole’s Winning Streak Now at 20 Games
Righthander Gerrit Cole signed with the New York Yankees for an enormous sum of money after last season, and the investment is paying off. On August 14th, Cole allowed one run and four hits while striking out eight as the Yankees beat the Boston Red Sox 10-3 at Yankee Stadium. Cole’s record improved to 4-0 on the season with a 2.76 ERA.
The victory was also a milestone in that it was Cole’s 20th straight victory dating back to May of last season, tying him for the third longest winning streak ever. He joins Rube Marquard (1911-12 with the New York Giants), Roger Clemons (1998-99 split between Toronto and the Yankees), and Jake Arrieta (2015-16 with the Chicago Cubs). Next up is Roy Face at 22 with the Pittsburgh Pirates from 1958-59, all of which were in relief. The leader is Carl Hubbell of the New York Giants, who won 24 in 1936-37.
