WHO ARE NELSON MANDELA & DESMOND TUTU?

The Mandela House is located at 8115 Vilakazi Street, Orlando West, Soweto in Johannesburg, South Africa. It was home to Nelson Mandela and family from 1946 to 1962. Mandela donated the house to the Soweto Heritage Trust in 1997 and it is now a museum, open to the public. Desmond Tutu moved into a nearby house in 1975 and, according to Wikipedia, still lived there in 2011. It is not open to the public.

Desmond Tutu won the 1984 Nobel Peace Prize. Nelson Mandela shared the 1993 Nobel Peace Prize with F.W. de Klerk. All were so honored for their work in ending apartheid. In 2007, Tutu’s Nobel medal was stolen from his Soweto home but was later recovered by the police.

Robbi picked Henry Kissinger and Angela Merkel. He lost $7,300 and finished with $100.

Mark had Mandela and Gandhi. He bet and lost his whole $13,600.

Kat had Mandela and was going for Obama. She lost $3,401 but won the game with the remaining $20,399. Kat Jepson is the new Jeopardy! champ.

4 Nobel Peace Prize winners have lived at the White House: Barack Obama 2009, Jimmy Carter 2002, Woodrow Wilson 1919, Teddy Roosevelt 1906

    • VJ says:

I really don’t see a basis for comparison there. They all lived at the same place when they were in office as President.

In Soweto, Mandela and Tutu lived in two different houses that were not residences connected with their positions.

    • Jacob Ska says:

That address usage doesn’t hold water imo because all individuals were politicians at the time of residency and employees of the Government. It’s akin to using 10 Downing Street in England.

      • VJ says:

True, Jacob, and there’s also the fact that Soweto was a segregated community. This interesting article by an author who grew up there, The Gentrification of Soweto, describes the then and now.

        • Jacob ska says:

VJ, Thank you for the link. Very informative. I saw the comments about the White House over the Internet yesterday. Never thought they would find their way over here. That’s like comparing apples and oranges.

If people want to open that Pandora’s Box they overlooked the former residents of Harvard University who have won Nobel Peace Prizes. Just saying!

  2. Howard says:

I thought Robbi had potential to be a multi-day champ, but he fizzled today. Great comeback by Kat, and that $5K DD wager was pretty gutsy.

I felt confident in Mandela/Gandhi, because the latter had once lived in S Africa. Oops.

How did no one know the British $400K ghost car? And I was sure at least 1 of them would come up with the Riksdag’s country. I cringe when Jeopardy players don’t know sports. Jerry Jones is very well-known,. The Mookie-Hack connection was tougher, but longtime fans know about Hack’s record 190 RBIs.

    • VJ says:

Gandhi did live in Johannesburg, Howard, but he left Africa before Mandela and Tutu were even born. Gandhi was a lot older than they were. Also, Mandela was more than 10 years older than Tutu.

    • Jacob ska says:

Howard, I was shocked by the Jerry Jones triple stumper too. I thought most people were familiar with the Cowboys…sports fans or not. Forbes Magazine and other news outlets always list them as the #1 NFL. Team in value and Jerry Jones name is attached as owner. Perhaps they need to make Superbowl appearances more frequently. LOL.

To be honest, I can’t say too much because I could only come up with Mandela for fj within 30 seconds. I got brain fog and Desmond Tutu never came to mind. 😣

  3. Travis says:

I came up with the right answer to the final super quick, thought this one was pretty easy.

  4. Rick says:

I came up with Mandela right off the bat, and I thought the other one was F. W. De Clerk (although I just couldn’t remember his name).

    • Sam in Seattle says:

I think Frederik Willem de Klerk was an excellent guess. He was born in Johannesburg and was active in apartheid but did not win the Nobel Peace Prize. He also died in 2021. I think Desmond Tutu got a little more media attention which is why I remembered him. I’m very impressed you remembered de Klerk.

  5. Ismael Gomez says:

And that is our first triple stumper this week as today’s final was a tough one.

    • Rick says:

Today’s final wasn’t that tough as Nelson Mandela was obviously a clear choice. Actually, it was the second one that proved to be the stumper.

  6. Sam in Seattle says:

I am so disappointed the final jeopardy clue was a miss for all the contestants. I admit Nelson Mandala was the easier of the two but Desmond Tutu died in 2021 so I can’t even blame age as a factor for the players. Perhaps we should encourage a little more “world” history study so our focus can be broadened. Good examples and wise ideas come from many parts of the globe. It would be a shame to be unaware of them. Note to VJ – hope the doctor’s appointment was routine. We care about you.

    • VJ says:

Thanks for the well wishes, Sam. I was also shocked at the results. It was kind of a shame that it didn”t come to Kat when she had time to write down 4 letters.
