WHAT IS CAPET?
King Louis XVI of France was forced to assume the name Citoyen (Citizen) Louis Capet by the National Convention after France was declared a republic in September 1792. The now former king was put on trial in December 1792, convicted of high treason and sentenced to death. He died on the guillotine on January 21, 1793. The former queen, now Antoinette Capet, was also called the Veuve (Widow) Capet. In October 1793, Marie Antoinette met the same fate as her husband.
The Capetian dynasty was founded in 987 by Hugh Capet, a descendant of Charlemagne. His direct descendants ruled France until 1328, and were succeeded by indirect descendants from the House of Valois and the House of Bourbon. Perhaps the National Convention chose to go all the way back to the surname Capet because a Bourbon was sitting on the throne of Spain.
