Final Jeopardy: Men of Medicine (8-18-21)

Today’s Final Jeopardy question (8/18/2021) in the category “Men of Medicine” was:

After giving birth in Paris, American Marjorie Karmel wrote “Thank You” him & co-founded an org. now named for him

Returning champ Kevin Martin, an E.R. physician from Bowling Green, OH, won $17,800 up to the point when this game first aired on September 27, 2007. In his Game 2, he was up against: Lateefah Torrence, a writer from New York, NY; and Richard Johnson, a foreign affairs officer from Washington, D.C.

Sound familiar? This show first aired on 9/27/2007 and was already rerun on 12/23/2020. To avoid any further confusion, I am repeating the 12/23/2020 right here.

Round 1 Categories: Archipelagos – & the Emmy Goes to… – The U.S. Air Force – Museums – What Are You Made of? – Beastly Noises

Richard found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “Museums” under the $600 clue on the 9th pick of the round. He was in the lead with $3,800. No one else had any money! He bet $1,500 and he was RIGHT.

NYC’s MoMA is the Museum of Modern Art; L.A.’s MOCA is the museum of this type of art. show

Richard finished in the lead with $12,500. Kevin was second with $2,400 and Lateefah was last with $800. No clues went uncovered.

Round 2 Categories: Consumer Reports Road Test – Quotable Movies – Anagrammed Shakespearean Characters – Party – “Like” – It’s 1999

Richard found the first Daily Double in “It’s 1999” under the $2,000 clue on the 7th pick. He was in the lead with $15,300 now, $12,500 more than Kevin in second place. He bet $3,500 and took a shot with Hillary. That was WRONG.

Perhaps because it was there, a 1999 expedition to Mt. Everest found this man’s body, which had been frozen there for 75 years. show

Richard got the last Daily Double in “Anagrammed Shakespearean Characters” under the $1,600 clue, with only one clue left after it. In the lead with $17,800, he had $9,800 more than Lateefah in second place. “Not my category,” he observed and bet a cautious $500. Wouldn’t you know it would be a cinch? He got it RIGHT away.

A fairy: NO ROBE show

Richard finished in the lead with a runaway $18,300. Lateefah was next with $8,000 and Kevin was in third place with $5,200. No clues went uncovered.

Only ONE of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHO IS FERNAND LAMAZE?

From Fact Monster: “The namesake of the Lamaze Method, Dr. Fernand Lamaze was a French obstetrician who championed the idea of painless childbirth. Based on ideas he had developed after visiting the U.S.S.R. and studying Ivan Pavlov, Lamaze advocated more aggressive support from fathers as well as relaxation and breathing techniques during pregnancy and childbirth. His philosophy caught on especially in the United States, promoted by Elisabeth Bing and others, founders of Lamaze International, a non-profit organization founded in 1960 to educate parents, physicians, nurses and midwives.” On Wikipedia, Marjorie Karmel is listed as a co-founder.

The most recent clue on the same topic was on 12/21/2016: PARDON MY FRENCH ($1200): This birthing method developed by a French doctor in the 1950s involves breath control & pain reduction

Kevin wrote down “Hi Mom”, crossed it out and went with Mont Carmel. He lost his $3,000 bet and finished with $2,200.

Lateefah got it right. She didn’t bet anything so she stayed at $8,000.

Richard went with Spock. That cost him $2,000 but he won the game with $16,300 and became the new Jeopardy! champ.

I am not surprised the players did not know Daniel Wadsworth the man who built the hartford ct atheneum. Definitely would like to visit that place. Som e easy clues missed during double jeopardy not sure if there is some lack of knowledge from the contestants?
