Final Jeopardy: Scrabble & Chemistry (7-9-15)
Today’s Final Jeopardy question (7/9/2015), in the category “Scrabble & Chemistry” was:
As a word used in Scrabble, this longest-named one of the 6 noble gases would give you the highest score.
New champ Jenny Thorngate won $22,001 yesterday. In her second game, her opponents are: Heather Melancon, originally from Elk Grove, IL; and Kathy Riley, from Winter Haven, FL.
Round 1: Jenny found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “Victory” under the $800 clue. There were 3 clues left but very little time. She was in second place with $2,600, $2,400 less than Heather’s lead. She bet $2,000 and thought it was Natchez. That was WRONG.
A turning point of the Civil War was the Union victory in this 1862-1863 campaign in Mississippi.ย show
The $1K clue in that category was a triple stumper. The round ended there with Heather in the lead at $5,000. Kathy was second with $1,200 and Jenny was last with $600.
Round 2: Jenny found the first Daily Double in “King James Bible Phrases” under the $2,000 clue. She was in second place now with $6,200, $2,800 less than Heather’s lead. She bet $2,000 but was unable to come up with a reply so she was WRONG.
“He is brought as” this phrase “and as a sheep before her shearers is dumb, so he openeth not his mouth.”ย show
Heather found the last Daily Double in “Olympians” under the $1,200 clue with 5 clues after it and again, very little time. In the lead with $11,000, she had $5,400 more than Kathy in second place. She bet $2,000 and guessed 1996. That was WRONG.
The youngest medalist ever was 10-year-old gymnast Dimitrios Loundras in his homeland in this year.ย show
They only got to the $1,600 clue in that category. Heather missed it but Kathy got it so the game was a lot closer now. Heather had the lead with $7,400 with Kathy right behind her at $7,200. Jenny was in third place with $4,200.
Only ONE of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.
WHAT IS KRYPTON?
The 6 noble gases are found in group 18 of the periodic table: At 7 letters, Krypton is the longest and has the highest scrabble score of 16. Here is a link to a Sporcle Quiz that wants to know if you can name the elements of the periodic table by their standard Scrabble score. There are three other elements that have the same scrabble score as Krypton — Hydrogen, Beryllium, and Ytterbium, so in that group Krypton is the shortest.
Jenny wrote down xenon. She lost her $4,000 bet and finished with $200.
Kathy got it right. She bet $1,201 and finished with $8,401.
Heather thought it was hydrogen. She lost her $7,201 bet and finished in third place with $199. So once again, we have a new champ. Congrats to Kathy Riley!
Kathy is a retired professor. During the chat, she shared the details of a trip she took in the 1970s from Rome to Russia in a VW Bug with 4 other people during a one-month Christmas break.

yes, slow — in the first round, I didn’t think they’d make it to the DD at that rate and likewise in the second for the last one.
Ah well, I’m glad Kathy won anyway. She could have bet more but she was real happy about it. Senior Power!
Congrats, Eric. You had the right prediction. ๐
Oh yeah! So shocked at the chemist missing I forgot to give a shoutout to Eric for a good call. Bet you thought she would be the one to get it right Eric.
Congrats to Kathy for winning.
Heather looked like she didn’t appreciate losing. Suck it up young lady and drop the attitude. You were on national tv.
mmmm, yeah, Heather looked like she was close to crying
No. She reminds me of someone who didn’t appreciate she wasn’t the one to win. Poor sportsmanship..
I think she was just peeved at herself: she had two chances to win. I’m sure she’s a very nice woman: I believe the contestant coordinators do a fantastic job of bringing good sports.
lol. I would have my head hanging into my open hand.
Yes, J, I would expect a chemist to get that one (who could just ignore the scrabble portion of the clue).
Lol. I got very lucky: I didn’t know that Jenny was a chemist.
You didn’t see her inroduced as a chemist last night?
Lol. I don’t have a TV, Jacob. It’s soooo peaceful.
well, FYI, when it’s a new champ, I try to remember to put that person’s occupation underneath the FJ image and what s/he talked about during the chat. Sometimes, if a player’s chat story makes me laugh, I root for that one. LOL.
Dang man, I remember you saying that a few years ago. I thought you had broken down and got one by now. Believe it or not I know a lot of people who don’t own tv’s. They watch a lot of stuff on their laptops.
Do you watch any of the J! youtube videos?
Actually, VJ, I really enjoy reading your whole rundown if I happen to watch a game : it is fantastic augmentation.
Jacob, I usually try and catch the ToC, and maybe a few games of the better players, but I don’t usually keep up with the normal games. Lol: like this game kind of looked like a June game between the Padres and the Astros.
What was wrong with Jenny’s “J.K. Rowling”? I know Kathy said “Rowlings” but I thought Jenny got it right?
The closed caption on my recording showed her response as “Rowlin” — leaving off the G. LINK
What? The chemist got it wrong. I’m in shock!
I’m done.
This was not a good game. Very slow moving.
Even chemists forget the elementary things, periodically.
LOL ๐
Obviously.
Sandy, you win the internet today. ๐
VJ, I liked your “Senior Power!” bit. Kathy sure wasn’t intimidated by the two young opponents. ๐
Like most have already stated here, this wasn’t a good game. I was surprised though as how well they did on that Congress category.
