WHO IS JONAS SALK?

Polio was a dreaded disease for much of the 20th century. Although it was considered a threat mainly to children, Franklin D. Roosevelt was diagnosed with it at age 39 in 1921. That diagnosis has since been questioned yet it led to the formation of the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis (aka the March of Dimes). Dr. Jonas Salk was a recipient of the foundation’s funding. He developed the inactivated polio vaccine (IPV) that was licensed in 1955 and substantially reduced new cases of the disease in just a few years.

A few years later, Albert Sabin developed the oral polio vaccine (OPV). Per the World Health Organization: “While IPV protected the vaccinated child, it did not stop the poliovirus from spreading between children. OPV, on the other hand, interrupted the chain of transmission, meaning that this was a powerful vaccine to stop polio outbreaks in their tracks.” Both men were inducted into the Polio Hall of Fame and each received a Presidential Medal of Freedom.

Mike bet $4501 and finished with $21,501.

Isaac bet 12,501 and won the game with $34,001. Isaac’s 8-day total is $195,389.

Ugh. Not a dead giveaway – I said “Sabin”. Sabin and Salk were hand-in-hand in working on polio. I gambled and lost!

Good two-way game. Mike’s a definite second-chancer if that’s ever a thing again. Attorneys often do well on the show, but Ashley may have set the profession back a few years. I remember an episode of “Millionaire” in which they brought back those who’d gone out on the $100 question.

Spock came to mind first, then I quickly realized it was Salk and polio vaccine.
Stunned no one knew what body of water Normandy borders.
Didn’t know the first lady until Ashley gave her last name, then I knew her first name.

Glad to hear that Isaac does standup comedy. He’s very humorous, likable, and frequently self-effacing.

I did exceeding well in the game today along with some of the DDs. As for the FJ, the clues were obviously referring to the polio vaccine so it was a dead giveaway.

Since when was the last time a Jeopardy contestant didn’t get a single question correct at all?

  5. Kevin Cheng says:

Ashley never got out of the hole and didn’t make it to Final. But Isaac has swept the week and has won the second most games of this season. Only 2 more weeks until the season finale.

I still don’t understand why contestants keep bouncing on the board. Just because of what happened last year doesn’t mean they’re going to have lots of tournaments.
