On the subject of confusing clues during the Alex T. era; I remember one from possibly 40 years ago.. Category-The Supreme Court. Clue: Warren Harding established a precedent by naming him to the Supreme Court. The correct response was WH Taft who was the first former president nominated to the Supreme Court, but also the last. It did not establish a precedent.
On the subject of confusing wording – “Being brought to the U.S. by a ship docking at San Francisco in 1859 helped to it now being a major crop in the Midwest.”
Here’s a link to an article I just put up last week with 10 random FJ! clues that just weren’t that good. The oldest one on there goes back to 1990.
btw, all the players solved “the major crop in the Midwest clue” — that was in the 7/6/2022 game in the category “Agriculture”
Maybe the medical student did not get Tommy John because they are probably taught the official medical terms for things, not slang terms such as ‘Tommy John’. For example, in medical school they use the word ‘mouth’ instead of ‘pie hole’. They also use the word ‘nose’ instead of schnoz. You see where I’m going with this. I don’t want to get near the other body parts.
Also, I hated the wording of the Final. The way the question was worded it seemed as if the answer should be just the older of the two artists. I hate when the Final is confusing as today’s was, at least for me.
Albert, you’re certainly not the only one who was confused by the clue. This morning, three of us, including myself, thought it called for one person. The 2 contestants who only named one constitute Exhibit A and many others have imdicated they thought it was poorly written.
I guessed Manet as the oldest because I knew he didn’t make it to the 20th century and Monet did.
I greatly prefer Jennings and mayim over Alex, but I don’t think Alex would have allowed such confusing wording. I think Alex had more power over the wording of the questions. Ken and mayim probably feel lucky just to be there and may be afraid of rocking the boat.
Albert, I think that’s just Trebek Mythology. There were plenty of confusing clues during Trebek’s tenure. There was even a completely wrong FJ! response accepted in 2012, which I’ve never forgotten. I mean, Trebek was raised Catholic and he should have known the Last Supper was NOT the correct response to that clue. (Of course, it was corrected after the fact)
Dude, off target. Eponyms are taught, along with the formal name. Ortho are some of the biggest sports fans, because that’s what they do. To equate “Tommy John” and “pie hole” or “schnoz” is almost absurd, if not definitely. I mean, when I was in med school, the NYC ortho guys called it “Tommy John surgery” when I rotated on Ortho. It’s like “Lou Gehrig’s Disease” for ALS or “Christmas Disease” for hemophilia B. Doctors are aware of these, and will mention them in passing. ENT is a hard “get”, and, if Alex matched in ENT, he’s a sharp one. He should have gotten that.
Also, the “longest tendon in the body” was factually wrong. It’s not the Achilles’. It is the plantaris tendon. Achilles’ is thicker, but plantaris is longer.
I know next to zilch about art, but thought FJ answer was obvious. It WAS a little tricky to read but not impossible. The show uses “this” and “these” frequently in the clues to direct the players to where they should go.
100% in agreement with Jason. I’m sure Alex bet big on that DD because it was in a medical-sounding category. That surgery is extremely popular and has been for decades. He should have known it, even if he’s not a baseball fan. Heck, last week he knew what klezmer music is!
Political unification country; Mt Vernon wallpaper; salty Cal lake were the only stumpers in my knowledge bin.
Hmmmm……….The clues obviously pointed to Monet, but I couldn’t come up with the older one (Manet).
I still don’t get it. The clue said the elder of these two artists… so weren’t they looking for just the older of either Manet or Monet? Which would be Manet??
Totally agree! It was poorly worded.
Only just Monet or Manet is not acceptable. Dileri and James were DQed for giving only one correct response; Alex got it precisely correct and no Triple Stumper for the Final today.
Alex’s overwager on the last DD and the two-part Final put a huge damper on what was an otherwise decent episode.
I felt bad for Alex. He played really well throughout the match until he hit a tough daily double. I hate to see that and it kind of hurts. But I got to give him credit for that best move cause he is a medical student and he graduated. Both challengers misread the clue and if only the Daily Double paid off for Alex, he would have won. But he is getting a guaranteed return in Champions Wildcard.
Yeah, that was a major bummer. I was dismayed to say the least when he bet that much with only 5 clues left worth $8,800. Lord have mercy!
Alex’s fatal mistake was to put all of the eggs in one basket, and that daily double was a mean one to say the least.
That was rather ignominious for Alex, and let me tell you why: he’s going into oto (otolaryngology), a surgical sub, and Ortho is another surgical sub. He should have known Tommy John, period. He would have rotated on ortho as a med student. That stands out like a sore thumb.
Sheepishly, I’ll tell you, I didn’t get FJ. Sheepish, because, Monet is my most favorite artist EVARRRR! But, I was a bit distracted, and didn’t pay attention to the FJ clue.
I predict James to be one and done.
