Final Jeopardy: Literary Settings (6-8-18)

Today’s Final Jeopardy question (6/8/2018) in the category “Literary Settings” was:

Ashdown Forest in Sussex inspired this fictional setting for a 1926 collection of stories for children

New champ Mirza Gluhic, a transcriber from Canada, won $28,200 yesterday. In his second game and the last game of the week, his opponents are: David Kleinman, a student from Massachusetts; and John Fassola, an attorney from Illinois.

Round 1 Categories: Italy Before the Romans – Pop Culture Squirrels – This Category Will Blow You Away – State of the Newspaper – Sailing Lit – Tongue-Twister Protagonists

Mirza found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “Italy before the Romans” under the $600 clue on the 5th pick of the round. At $600, he was in a tie for the lead with John. They both had $400 more than David in second place. He bet $1,000 and he was RIGHT.

David finished in the lead with $16,800. Mirza was next with $13,000 and John was in third place with $8,600.

TWO of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHAT IS THE HUNDRED ACRE WOOD?

The Hundred Acre Wood, home to Winnie the Pooh and friends, is based on an area of Ashdown Forest known as the “Five Hundred Acre Wood.” According to Winniepedia: “In the original Winnie-the-Pooh books by A. A. Milne, the name “Hundred Acre Wood” is used only to refer to the parts of the forest surrounding Owl’s house, with the other characters residing outside of it. Nowadays, however, and especially in the Disney adaptations of the franchise, the name is usually used to refer to the whole forest, as Milne’s books provided no better alternative for it. Thus, using the broader definition, the Hundred Acre Wood includes such locations as Owl’s House, Pooh’s house, Piglet’s house, the Pooh Corner (renamed Pooh & Piglet Corner in Piglet’s Big Movie), the Poohsticks Bridge, Rabbit’s house and Tigger’s house.”

John wrote down “Pooh Forest.” He lost his $8,300 bet and was left with $300.

Mirza got it right. His $12,000 bet, brought him up to $25,000.

David got it, too. He bet $14,800 so he won the match with a hefty $31,600. David Kleinman is the new Jeopardy! champ.

Final Jeopardy (6/8/2018) Mirza Gluhic, David Kleinman, John Fassola

STATE OF THE NEWSPAPER ($1000) The Brattleboro Reformer

SONG TIME ($1600) The title of this 1970 Chicago hit is a little snappier than “3:35 or 3:34”

2 years ago: Only ONE of the players got this FJ in “Famous Americans”

Of his greatest accomplishment, he humbly remarked, “Pilots…Take pride in a good landing, not in getting out of the vehicle” show

    There’s a new Winnie the Pooh movie called Christopher Robin. Coming only to theaters August 3rd.

    Every game this week, the winning scores improved. We had $599 on Monday, $9,384 on Tuesday, $18,401 on Wednesday, $28,200 on Thursday, and Friday’s $31,600 was the highest winning score of this week.

    VJ, you left out part of the clue on the second Daily Double.

  4. Lou says:

    Congrats to David and to the contestants. Plus John I agree with you, we need David to string up four wins or more since we had a week of leader curses with just one day winners. We need at least one or two four or five game winners here. Also VJ, you’ve read Winnie the pooh to your kids right? And what exactly is the Pooh Forest? Such a funny answer by John. Plus it’s been a while since we have seen a contestant eliminated when they have a negative score. How often does this happen?

    • VJ says:

      @Lou, we just had a 3x champ last week though. I’m sure my kids had a few Pooh Bear books and they watched Winnie the Pooh on TV. My son liked Tigger and his “bouncy, trouncy, flouncy, pouncy” song.

      I liked that tongue twister category today. Alex doing that Moses toeses song reminded me of the other when they missed the Vasco da Gama clue. Idk how many people saw it on that day’s extra clues, but I found a youtube where this guy had set a childhood rhyme he learned as a boy in India to a Bollywood song and I thought it was cute:

      “Vasco da Gama, went to the drama, without his pyjama”

    @John B., thanks for the kudos. However, I wanted to comment on you being surprised male contestants would know the correct response to fj. Why? My grandfather & father read me bedtime stories including Winnie-the-Pooh when I was little. There can’t be a generation gap because I’ve read Winnie-the-Pooh to my kids & grandchildren. These stories are ageless. Disneyworld & Disneyland have the Winnie-the-Pooh Rides that take people through the Hundred Acre Wood. I’ve seen many males on these rides with their children/grandchildren (including myself) when we went to Florida & California. Information is given during the ride on how the author came up with the concept. It’s one of those things that stick with you from childhood. Gender is not a factor.

    Regarding Dominic Thiem don’t underestimate him. He won the French Open semi-finals in three straight sets. He ranks #7 in tennis so he’s not a pushover & Nadal has lost final matches before. I’m rooting for Dominic just like I’m rooting for the Warriors tonight. Monday morning you & I will either be happy or sad depending upon the outcome of both events. Have a good weekend & stay safe buddy.

      @Jacob

      You do the same and thanks for the support. Has been a long time since Thomas
      Muster in Austrian tennis…he won the French Open in ’95 vs Becker after having been hit in ’89 in Miami, just before the final against Lendl , undergoing serious surgery. He was a REALLY tough cookie. Golden State might lose on purpose today to wrap it up at home on Monday…just a feeling. And remember what I said about David. He will NOT be just a one day champ.!!
      Take care!!

      • John B says:

        @Jacob
        As far as reading is concerned, my parents were too busy to read to me, so by the age of 4 I was reading all by myself, tucked away in a corner, trying not to bother anyone. And in Europe Winnie is (or at least was) not really known. Grimm brothers, Karl May etc. In 1951′ s Austria you had not many translations of foreign books. The war was just over 6 years, ravaging the entire continent and Austria would still be occupied for another 4 years before gaining independence (the only country the Soviets EVER left voluntarily)….So reading at that age was pretty much limited to German sourced matter. Later on I was too old for fairy tales. Just an explanation I guess. Winnie is in the U.S. probably as popular as the Grimm Brothers are in Germany/Austria to this very day.

  6. John B. says:

    @Jacob and @JJ
    Congratulations!! The “J”s did it again (except for me, closing out a disastrous week)
    @JJ
    VJ was clairvoyant when she added “fortunate”…
    In general I was surprised that three guys, two of them pretty young, John might have a few Years on David and Mirza, got this. Well, you learn something every day.
    And WOW, what a gutsy bet by David, instead of the conservative 9.201…but there are many strategies in FJ betting. If you are right, you might as well clean up, if you are wrong you can lose with a conventional bet.
    And we have another new champion, though if I may make a prediction already for next week: David will N O T be a one day champion, maybe he can even string 4 or more together!! And Jacob, I think you know why I think so..???!!!!

    To everybody: HAVE A GREAT WEEKEND !!!!! I am proud that an Austrian is in the French Open Final, though he won’t have much chance against Nadal. BUT:…..there’s always a but…
    who knows?
