Final Jeopardy: Notorious 20th Century Names (6-4-15)

Today’s Final Jeopardy question (6/4/2015), in the category “Notorious 20th Century Names” was:

Morton Sobell, a co-defendant with these 2, was also convicted but received a lighter sentence.

New champ Jami Griffeth won $11,000 in yesterday’s game. She’s back today to take on these two players: Jenny Orr, from Cleveland, OH; and Addison Godel, from Brooklyn, NY.

Round 1: Addison found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “The South Pacific” under the $1,000 clue, with one category left on the board. He was in second place with $3,800, $600 less than Jenny’s lead. He bet $2,000 and came up with idols. That was WRONG.

Jenny finished in the lead with $5,200. Addison was second with $4,000 and Jami was last with $2,200.

Round 2: Addison found the first Daily Double in “Mythology” under the $1,200 clue. He was now in the lead with $10,000, $4,000 more than Jenny in second place. He bet $4,000 and he was RIGHT, much to his surprise.

Addison found the last Daily Double in “Let’s Duke It Out” under the $1,600 clue. He had quite the lead with $22,400 now, $18,400 more than Jenny in second place. He bet $4,000 and guessed Bloody Mary. That was WRONG.

The Duke of Northumberland (1504-1553) arranged for his son to marry this unfortunate lady in 1553; oops. show

Addison finished in the lead with a runaway $20,400. Jenny was next with $6,400 and Jami was in third place with $4,200.

Only ONE of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHO ARE JULIUS AND ETHEL ROSENBERG?

“In 1951, Morton Sobell was tried and convicted with Julius and Ethel Rosenberg on espionage charges. He served more than 18 years in Alcatraz and other federal prisons, traveled to Cuba and Vietnam after his release in 1969 and became an advocate for progressive causes. Through it all, he maintained his innocence. But on Thursday [9/11/2008], Mr. Sobell, 91, dramatically reversed himself, shedding new light on a case that still fans smoldering political passions. In an interview, he admitted for the first time that he had been a Soviet spy.” (NYT: Figure in Rosenberg Case Admits to Soviet Spying )

Jami wrote down Sacco and Vanzetti. She lost her $3,200 bet and finished with $1,000.

Jenny had the same answer as Jami. She lost her $2,001 bet, finishing with $4,399.

Addison got it right. He bet $4,000 and won the match with $24,400. And once again, we have a new champ.

FJ Results: 6-4-15

Addison is a Ph.D student in architectural history. He’s been working on post-WW2 architectural history lately. Ma Bell’s telephone exchanges in the 1960s, in particular, he said. Maybe they didn’t have them in Canada back then because Alex didn’t go into that. Ours was HUmboldt.

I know you don’t allow disrespectful comments but I just have to say this or I will explode. Addison seems very nice but…how can such a smart guy have that hair? I thought on the first appearance maybe he was having a bad hair day. It just seems so purposefully, um, weird.

I thought it was The Eleventh Doctor Look. 🙂

Weird? Susan where in the heck do you live? He’s a college student. I’ve seen hair colored purple, blue, green, rainbow colors, etc., on young people including college students. That’s weird imo.

At least his hair was one color. LOL

The style was trendy…especially for a college student.

    @jacob
you were right, the New Yorker got it
    and finally congratulations to Addison,
our new champ.Jami could not repeat as I thought, finished dead last.

Congrats, Eric on your 1 correct prediction.

All right, all right, all right Addison homeboy!

As I said if a contestant is from New York that person would get the clue correct.

Morton is still alive which is amazing. His name pops up in NY newspapers and his 2008 confession to the NYT made the younger generation aware of the Rosenbergs. Thanks for the link to one of the recent articles vj. Well done.

    • jacob ska says:

Btw, Sacco and Vanzetti were executed for their robbery and murder in 1927 long before Rosenbergs were executed.

      • VJ says:

Wow, yeah, I would have gotten this because I forgot about S&V. And Jami and Jenny didn’t get it because they remembered them. :-0

I wasn’t around in 1927, my father was 3 and my mom wasn’t born yet. But when E&J went to the chair, I was almost 2.

Thank you Jacob! Even a blind nut finds a squirrel every once in a while.

      • VJ says:

Yes, congrats, Eric. That was your second squirrel this week. — I would add, *you nut* but you know how things can get taken the wrong way online. LOL. (Both right in crime categories, too.)
