Final Jeopardy: New York City (6-25-21)

Here are some more triple stumpers from the 6/25/2021 Jeopardy! game:

AROUND THE GARDEN? ($800) In a Simon & Garfunkel song, this quartet is in the line after “Are you going to Scarborough Fair?”

($1000) On a military uniform, this “cluster” denotes further awards of a decoration already received

THEY ARE QUITE THE CHARACTERS! ($800) The fast-to-fury Hobbs, the not-quite-himself Dr. Smolder Bravestone

JOURNALISTS($800) Matt Bai, Judith Crist & Steve Kroft have been honored as distinguished alumni of this university’s School of Journalism

($1600) Before her career (image) in PBS, NPR & CNN, she just went by the last name Hunter when she desegregated the University of Georgia in 1961

AMERICAN FACTORY ($800) These “planetary” rockets that took us to the moon were made in the NASA vehicle assembly building in Florida

WORLD LITERATURE ($1200) Russian characters can be confusing & Gogol didn’t help with a story about a quarrel by 2 men who both had this common first name

7-LETTER WORDS ($1600) The National Federation of the Blind uses this word, not “unblind”

($2000) An airplane’s maximum altitude in sustained flight

Sneak Peek clues — SINGING
($200) The lowest range of male voice, it’s also a musical instrument
($400) If you hit a random piano key & your 5-year-old tells you it’s a D-sharp, she has this quality & a singing career may be in store
($600) In one anecdote, Mack Sennett said, I hear that you sing & Bing Crosby replied, “Yes, they call me” this kind of singer
($800) Barry Gibb is famous for this “untrue” type of high singing voice
($1000) Giovanni Rubini was a master of this vocal effect, the natural wavering of pitch while singing a note

I’ve had a frustrating two months with two *almost* skunks, but no cigar. On one occasion my mind just went blank (I’ve taken much US history in school and why the Monroe Doctrine wouldn’t pop into my brain is beyond explanation) and then on another I changed my response from “Liechstenstein” to “Andorra” but not until after the “thinking” music stopped. I visited midtown Manhattan once so, finally, I clicked at the right moment. I almost took the bait and responded with “What is Broadway” because the principle diagonal street crossing Manhattan is that one. But the “3-word nickname” stopped me in my tracks, and I switched well-before the end of the 30-seconds. That’s Final Jeopardy! “skunk” number eight for me this year.

Some enjoyable moments in today’s game — here’s a couple I got a kick out of:

Arman starting to say “parsley” and then saying “oh, c’mon” when he blanked out. Savannah calling time on the Scarborough Fair clue (which had thyme in the answer) and especially in the last round…

Arman buzzing right in with “Heckle & Jeckle” on the Gogol clue. I loved that grin on his face. 🤣🤣🤣

I am taking the online test tomorrow. Wish me luck.

I came up with ‘Great Light Way’, but I was close.

  5. MICHAEL S GROSS says:

What was the final answer. Bright new lighting installed in 1880 on a street that crosses Manhattan diagonally led to this 3-word nickname

    • VJ says:

@Michael, the final answer is always in the recap —

look at the first line under NONE of the players etc.

Tough Final as we end the week with a triple stumper.

  7. Lou says:

Well if anyone here is a life long new yorker or has frequently visited New York they cannot miss the Great White way along with broadway and Times Square My family and I have visited the intrepid museum and MOma many times in the past. Not bad guesses. I might have actually been to manhattan once but midtown is pretty cool. We close out the week without a five time champion and a few triple stumpers in final but hopefully someone will get 4 games won next week.

    • William Weyser says:

And hopefully, next week will be a good week. Yes, I am gonna miss Savannah Guthrie next Monday, but we must move on.

    • Howard says:

If you’ve been to MOMA many times, you’ve been in Manhattan more than once.
I’m a native NYer and the final was a cinch, as you suggested. But I’ve never heard of an “intrepid” museum.

The FJ wagers seemed a bit odd to me.

      • rhonda says:

The Intrepid Museum that Lou is talking about is on a ship that is situated on one of the piers on the west side, somewhere in the 40’s.

      • Janet says:

The intrepid is an aircraft carrier that’s docked in the Hudson river. It serves as a sea air and space Museum.
