Final Jeopardy: Airlines (6-19-17)

Today’s Final Jeopardy question (6/19/2017) in the category “Airlines” was:

On June 17, 1929 this airline’s first passenger flight left Dallas, making stops at Shreveport, Monroe & Jackson.

New champ Peter Guekguezian won $18,401. His challengers in his second match are: Barbara Fox, from Tucson, AZ; and Jeremy Fassler, from Brooklyn, NY.

Round 1 Categories: Puzzlers – Who They Served – Rock, Paper, Scissors – Names You Should Know – House Full of Lit – The Fight of the Century

Peter found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “Who They Served” under the $1,000 clue, with 9 clues to go after it. He was in second place with $2,400, $2,800 less than Jeremy’s lead. He made it a true Daily Double and thought it was the CIA. That was WRONG.

Jeremy finished in the lead with $6,000. Peter was second with $1,800 and Barbara was last at negative $200.

Round 2 Categories: The Old Part of Town – An Avian Category – Weather – Music-“al”s – Easy Japanese – The Century of the Fight

Peter found the first Daily Double in “Century of the Fight” under the $1,200 clue on the 9th pick. He was in second place with $4,200 at this point, half of Jeremy’s lead. He decided to go with *another* Daily Double (he emphasized that). He actually gave the correct response but forgot to phrase it in the form of a question, so that was WRONG.

Peter found the last Daily Double in “Old Part of Town” under the $2,000 clue. Only 9 clues were left after it. In the lead with $7,200, he now had $800 more than Jeremy in second place. He bet $4,800 and came up with Al Qibla. That was WRONG.

“Come with me to” this exotic old section of Algiers; it’s name is from the Arabic for “citadel” show

Holy smokes! On the very last clue of Double Jeopardy! in the “Weather” category, each player felt compelled to play the “if it’s not that, it must be this” guessing game and it cost each of them $800. Peter buzzed in first with a wrong response and Jeremy had twice Peter’s score before he buzzed in with a wrong response, too!

Jeremy finished in the lead with $6,400. Peter was next with $3,600 and Barbara was in third place with $1,800.

Only ONE of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHAT IS DELTA?

On June 17, 1929, Delta’s first passenger flight left Dallas, TX at 8:00 in th morning, piloted by Johnny Howe, “one of the first pilots in the nation to receive a commercial pilot’s license.” The Travel Air S-6000-B could accommodate up to five passengers, but according to Delta’s “First Flights” page, only Delta Air Service Operations Manager, J.S. Fox, was on board. They couldn’t sell round-trip tickets because they were picking up a group of Jackson, MS city officials on the last stop to make the return flight to Dallas.

Barbara thought it was American Airlines. She bet and lost it all.

Peter started with Southwest but crossed it out for the correct response. His $3,598 bet, finishing with $7,198.

Jeremy came up with TWA. That cost him $801 bet so he landed in second place and Peter remains champ with a 2-day total of $25,599.

Although this was a tough game, but here is a list of airlines:
    1. Southwest
    2. Delta
    3. American airlines
    4. TWA
Which airline do you prefer generally when you are going on a family vacation to Florida or to the Midwestern states, VJ? Also there has not been a reversal and I thought that cyclone would have been accepted since it is like a tornado.

    • VJ says:

I don’t have a favorite airline, Lou. I think tornado was one of the wrong responses to that $800 Weather clue. The other two were monsoon and hurricane.

I could not believe Peter missed the “Come with me” DD!!! I wonder if he would have picked up on it if Alex read in a Pepe Le Pew accent.

It’s disappointing that jeopardy got the hurricane response wrong and didn’t fix it.
