Final Jeopardy: 1990s Animated Films (6-13-18)

Today’s Final Jeopardy question (6/13/2018) in the category “1990s Animated Films” was:

Though it draws elements from “Hamlet”, Disney says this was their first all-animated feature based on an original story

2x champ Catherine Ono, a software developer from California, doubled her winnings to $46,402 yesterday. In Game 3, she takes on these two players: Diana Hsu, a legal records assistant from Massachusetts; and Nick Anspach, a political science professor from Pennsylvania.

Round 1 Categories: Science – “S”even Letter Words – U.S. Libraries – Singers’ Shared First Names – Politics & Current Affairs Books – Back Peddling

Diana found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “U.S. Libraries” under the $1,000 clue with 11 clues to go after it. She was in third place with $1,600, $3,400 less than Catherine’s lead. She bet $600 and guessed Chicago. That was WRONG.

Housing millions of records, the Family History Library in this city attracts genealogists from all over the world. show

Catherine finished in the lead with $6,600. Diana was second with $4,400 and Nick was last with $4,000.

Round 2 Categories: Appalachian Appellation – Top TV Shows 1968 – Idiom Origins – X-Men Mark the Literary Spot – Bach – To the Future

Nick found the first Daily Double in “Bach” under the $800 clue on the 7th pick. He was in the lead with $9,200 now, $2,200 more than Catherine in second place. He bet $4,000 and thought it was “The Well-Tempered Clavier.” That was WRONG (on this clue anyway).

Count Keyserling may have commissioned this work, 30 takes on one theme, named for the Count’s harpsichordist. show

Nick found the last Daily Double in “Appalachian Appellation” under the $1,200 clue, with 7 clues left after it. In third place with $7,200, he had $6,000 less than Diana’s lead. He bet $3,000 and had no guess so he was WRONG.

As early as the 1920s, American Jews were summering in this alliterative area of the Catskills. show

Diana finished in the lead with $16,000. Catherine was next with $11,400 and Nick was in third place with $5,000.

ALL of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHAT IS “THE LION KING”?

Mari Ness has a very comprehensive article on Tor.com called “This is not Hamlet: Disney’s Lion King,” suggesting that Bambi might make a better comparison. The plagiarism allegations surrounding “Kimba the White Lion” (1965) are examined and there’s a list of similarities as well as differences between “Hamlet” and “The Lion King.” I liked this one from the Only in Hamlet list: “A mild obsession with whether or not nunneries are an appropriate career option…”

Nick bet it all and finished with $10,000.

Catherine bet $2.200, bringing her up to $13,600.

Diana bet $8,001 bet, winning the match with $24,001. Diana Hsu is the new Jeopardy! champ.

Final Jeopardy (6/13/2018) Catherine Ono, Diana Hsu, Nick Anspach

A triple stumper from each round:

SCIENCE ($400) Development of an organism from gamete to fetus is the focus of this -ology

TO THE FUTURE ($2000) This “Cloud Atlas” author gave a new novel to Norway’s future library but you can’t read it until 2114

I’m disappointed that Nick did not get the daily doubles today. How often do you see the men on jeopardy making bad guesses,VJ? And here I thought those clues should have pointed them in the right direction. But still a third triple solve is better than whiffing out. Let’s see if diana can get a four game run going. Plus, what other disney movies did your kids liked aside from the lion king?

    • VJ says:

@Lou, I guess I see bad guesses on Jeopardy! as often as you do since we are watching the same games 😀

In my family, I think we tend to like the songs more than the Disney films themselves. Here is a list of the 102 Best Disney Songs according to Buzzfeed. I guess I am an oddball because 2 of my favorite songs ranked really low — No. 101: An Actor’s Life for Me from Pinocchio and No. 99: The Siamese Cat Song from Lady and the Tramp. Oh well, at least my other favorite “Poor Unfortunate Souls” from Little Mermaid came in at No. 17.

The Lion King is gonna be live action movie with Jay-Z’s husband Beyonce Knowles formely from Destiny’s Child. Disney Junior now has a series called the Lion Guard with Kion Simba and Nala’s son and Kiara’s brother.

      • Louis says:

True, Imean in the last 30 years that this show had been on, not that many contestants would make random guesses on a category and lose money over it. Also, that rule, don’t ring in if you don’t know the answer, has that ever been used so far for this game, VJ? I know most streakers would follow that rule but for new contestants, they don’t follow it and just buzz in and make incorrect guesses. To be honest, when Josh Hill was around, he missed a few final jeopardy questions because of some bad guesses, however, he made up for it later.

        • John B. says:

Well, as I said Louis, the 2 misses on the DDs cost him the game. And that all 3 DDs were missed was a little bit of a “smudge” on the whole thing. But they were – compared to the last 2 FJs_ kind of difficult today, at least imo. I guess you win some, you lose some.

          What’s true?

  2. John B. says:

    @VJ and @JJ
Congrats!!! I think this is the first time that in regular games we had 3 triple solves in a row. But Charlotte’s Web and The Lion King were kind of easy, easier than today’s DDs imo. Nick lost the game with missing both his DDs, he would have had 14 K more and the lead before FJ. had he been right.
And we have yet another new champ. Now it is up to Diane to string 4 together (or more).

Right now it looks pretty good for Marty Cunningham, being # 9 overall on the ToC list. Even Jeffrey looks good. They need seven 4 or 4+ winners to eliminate a 3 game winner from the ToC

Congrats also to Diane as a new champ.
