WHO IS JULES VERNE?

In the first chapter of Jules Verne’s novel “Around the World in Eighty Days,” Phileas Fogg hires Jean Passepartout to replace his servant, James Forster who got canned for not bringing shaving-water at the right temperature. Passepartout explains that his surname is a result of “going from out of one business into another.” Having heard that Fogg is “the most exact and settled gentleman in the United Kingdom,” Passepartout hopes to live a tranquil life in Fogg’s employ. However, due to a £20,000 bet Fogg makes with his friends at London’s Reform Club, the two men set out on a journey around the world that must be completed in 80 days to win.

Since Edgar Allan Poe was this week’s first FJ topic, it’s worth mentioning that his short story “Three Sundays in a Week” was an inspiration to Jules Verne regarding gaining an extra day.

Jessica bet $1,000, bringing her up to $7,000.

Julie bet $4,000. She finished with $20,200.

Josh bet $6,601 bet, winning the match with $32,401, giving him a fantastic 3-day total of $82,886.

We won’t be seeing Josh for another 2 weeks. The Teachers Tournament will take place over the next 2 weeks.

Do you guys have a ‘secret club’? You always talk about things that aren’t begun here.

    • VJ says:

It’s not a secret club, Becci. It’s just something you have to find on your own and decide on your own if you want to participate. A post goes up every weekday morning called Spoiler Talk where people who want to can make a prediction on how many players will get the final clue right and/or give a hint as to what the right answer to the clue is. Like today, for instance, there’s a link to “Spoiler Talk (Fri)” in the list at the top left. (The FJ clue is usually on Jeopardy’s site long before the games air most days.)

    • Nell says:

Hi Becci… I’m kind of new here too. And yes, it takes a little while to get acclimated.

But I’ve found this to be one of the friendliest, most welcoming sites on the net. My advice would be to start each morning with the comments on Clue of the Day. The later comments often refer back to that post.

Unless of course you don’t want to know the CotD. Then you’re on your own.😉

At last a triple solve by the contestants. Congrats to everyone. Also Josh is on a roll now, i assume he could expand his win even further after the teacher’s tournament. So,far we had almost seven weeks of leader curses so far in late February and throughout March. With druhv as the only April winner, we could expect a streaker and a 100000 winner from a teacher in May. Also VJ, you must be tired of the one day winners right? Do you prefer streaker wins? I love the book around the world in 80 days. What other Jules Verne books did you read so far?

    • VJ says:

@Lou, I don’t mind the one-day winners. I like to see the wealth get spread around, and if I had any say over the tournaments, it would go by the top 15 payouts period in regular play, regardless of how many games played.

I read 20,000 Leagues and Journey to the Center of the Earth too.

  4. John B. says:

@VJ, Second DD: “know” or “knew”?

    • Jacob Ska says:

@John B., a big congratulations on your correct prediction. I will repeat Monday morning on Spoiler Talk but couldn’t wait. You deserve it buddy. Aloha.

      Have a great weekend.

    • VJ says:

@John, it’s “know” — they are punning on Brynner’s name to say “you’ll know”
