WHAT IS AN ARMADILLO?
Mental Floss has a list of 12 Odd Facts about armadillos that apply to the breed in general and also specific species. No. 8 is about the nine-banded armadillo, “the only species common in the U.S. It ranges throughout the American South, from Texas to the Atlantic and as far north as Nebraska. It is also common in Mexico. Though their name would suggest otherwise, nine-banded armadillos can have anywhere from seven to 11 bands in their armor.” German immigrants called the armadillos “Panzerschwein”, meaning “armored pig”. According to Wikitionary, the actual German word for armadillo is “gürteltiere” (belt animal) and before that, it was “armadill”.
The nine-banded armadillo is the Official State Small Mammal of Texas
Steve got it right. He bet $2,400 and finished with $4,800.
Nibir went with the coyote. That cost him $1,001 and left him with $12,199.
Karen got it. She bet $2,000 and won the game with $16,200. Karen is the second ToC semi-finalist. Check in tomorrow to see who gets a spot between Jennifer Quail, Paul Trifiletti, and Ryan Hemmel.

Go, Karen! Redemption!! Whoo!!!!
Panzerschwein means “armored pig” not “tank pig”. The term “Tank” for armored fighting vehicles was British and not used until mid World War 1. So early German settlers in Texas couldn’t have used a term that had not yet been invented. “Panzer” (which is used interchangeably for “tank” in modern times) is short for “Panzerkampfwagen” which means “Armored Fighting (or War) Vehicle”. Literal German for “Tank” (such as a water tank) is…”tank”.
This annoyed me too, so I headed off to Google which brought me here. How many post 1918 German immigrants into Texas started using the term Panzer for tank? Pretty much none, I’d have thought.
Two super-sharp players tonight, and one who could garner no momentum.
But boy, they left a LOT of clues on the table.
I hope it’s not just me but I thought “If” by Kipling was overvalued at $2,000.
LOL, Jacob. I thought that if they HAD to put in the Frost and Wordsworth clues, they should have been $400 and $800.
btw, the warship poem was written by Oliver Wendell Holmes who was a triple stumper himself recently in a “father of a Supreme Court Justice” clue
VJ, everyone in my household said the same thing you said about the value of Frost and Wordsworth clues. We were all scratching our heads and there are no poets in the family either. LOL.
This was high school material.
Even with my attempts to learn “Jeopardy” poetry clues, I was stumped on the Kipling and Wordsworth clues, although I got the Frost, Eliot, and Holmes clues. Anything with a little depth and I’m hopeless.
$2K would be a proper amount for a regular game, but not a TOC game. I know the poem, but I haven’t thought about it for a long time so I, personally, drew a blank.
Buzzy would be a fantastic permanent host.
I’m guessing Sarah won’t be a wild card unless every other challenger finishes in the red however that scenario is very unlikely. Karen has a strong performance today and I am excited to see her in the finals.
Sarah’s chance of advancement would be less than zero, if that were possible.
Supposedly, contestants in quarterfinal matches in tournaments are not permitted to watch or discuss each other’s first-round games, so they cannot strategize how to get a wild card.
So far my tournament bracket is flip flopped.
I said Jason Zuffranieri would be a semifinalist, but instead it was Ryan Bilger.
I said Nibir Sarma would win, and Karen would be eliminated. Karen won and Nibir could be a wild card.
Nibir seems to have a good chance to advance into the semi finals but we shall see how well our next group does. Speaking of the final , VJ, have you heard of company of heroes the computer strategy game? The term panzer referred to the German tank division during the second world war. Karen pretty much dominated the game today but I am happy Steve also got final despite not being able to build up momentum. I am thinking this could be an all ladies final or two ladies plus sam kavanaugh.
There’s never gonna be an all female final in the Tournament of Champions.
Definitely some ToC level clues. Those ‘4 OF THE SAME LETTER’ clues were almost impossible – so little to go on. The only one I could get was the top row.
