Final Jeopardy: Vice Presidents (5-1-15)
The Final Jeopardy question (5/1/2015), in the category “Vice Presidents” was:
Of the 5 former Vice Presidents still living, he held the office the earliest.
6x champ Greg Seroka has now won $150,800. In his 7th game and the last game of the week, he is up against these two players: Amanda Garrett, from Greenville, SC; and Chris Gunter, from Rochester, NY
Round 1: Greg found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “Traveling” under the $800 clue. He was in the lead with $3,600, $1,400 more than Amanda in second place. He made it a true Daily Double and took a shot with “Heineken”. That was WRONG.
A cold beer is just the thing to quench your thirst when cruising along this river in the capital of the Netherlands. show
Amanda finished in the lead with $3,800. Chris was second with $3,200 and Greg was last with zero.
Round 2: Chris found the first Daily Double in “Nice Ending, Shakespeare!” under the $1,200 clue on the second pick of the round. He was in second place with $3,600, only $200 less than Amanda’s lead. He bet it all and he was RIGHT.
Caesar: “No grave upon the earth shall clip in it a pair so famous… see high order in this great solemnity.” show
Greg found the last Daily Double in “Scaly Critters” under the $2,000 clue with 4 clues left to go. He was now in second place with $12,000, $4,400 less than Chris in the lead. He bet $4,500 and he was RIGHT.
Due to microscopic scales, the name of this order, including moths and butterflies, means “scaly winged” in Greek. show
Greg finished in the lead with $16,500. Chris was next with $14,800 and Amanda was in third place with $10,200.
TWO of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.
The five former VPs who are still living are (in ascending order of dates served): Walter Mondale (1977-81), George H.W. Bush (1981-89), Dan Quayle (1989-93), Al Gore (1993-2001) and Dick Cheney (2001-09). (Maps of the World: List of Vice Presidents)
From 2001: VICE PRESIDENTIAL RHYME TIME ($300) Mondale’s midriff-baring tops
Amanda thought it was George H.W. Bush. She lost her $10,100 bet and finished with $100.
Chris got it right. His $5,601 bet brought him up to $20,401.
Greg also got it right. His $13,101 bet gave him a winning total today of $29,601. His 7-day total is $180,401 and for the second time, he will be the returning champ on Monday.
During the chat, Greg said he was going to spend some of his winnings on a trip to Russia that will include stops in St. Petersburg and Moscow and, quite possibly, some vodka sampling.

Is Greg really a chef? He is so bright and knows so much that I wonder if his real job is something different. How long has he been a chef and what were his other occupations?
@Lillian, it says he is the executive chef at La Montana in Steamboat Springs at the bottom of their online menu
Don’t forget Brad Rutter, all-time money winner on Jeopardy, described himself as a college dropout.
Some people have a better memory than most of us. I do recall during one of the Jeopardy chats with Alex there was some discussion about Greg and law school–I think. 😛
Amsterdam is not the capital of the Netherlands, it,s The Hague, and an Amstel river does not run through it.
Good game! by all 3 players! I never thought Greg was gonna pull off a lead, let alone a victory tonight. Congrats!
yes, omg! I thought it was curtains for Greg, too. I was really happy he didn’t mispronounce lepidoptera like I did. LOL!
I think this will turn out to be a helluva TOC if it’s Greg vs. Alex in the finals plus a third player with a lightning buzzer speed
I let out a loud exhale when he got that DD right. Yeah, we’re in for an exciting TOC if these tigers plus a third, face one another.
Loved the Shakespeare categories; missed only the $2,000 clue — that T.A. again!
Well, knock me over with a feather — I even thought about you on that clue. Weren’t we talking about Lucius not too long ago as a child in a Shakespeare play on that Richard III FJ in a Kerry game?
Exactly, I knew the answer! One of those occasions when you have something at the tip of your tongue but can’t spit it out? Like sometimes when a contestant rings but draws a blank? Titus Andronicus would not come out!
or like me on that DD, blurting out the answer with an extra letter in it. A word I know but never had a reason to say. Ha! If I was there, I would have been in for a Trebek scolding for sure.
I will always keep my name anonymous!
Me too.
Sup Dvorak?
Here are the rest of clues in today’s Shakespeare category:
$400 – Lucentio: “‘Tis a wonder, by your leave, she will be tamed so.”
$800 – “Give me your hands, if we be friends: and Robin shall restore amends”
$l,600 – Benedick: “Strike up, pipers!”
$2,000 – Lucius: “As for that ravenous tiger, Tamora… her life was beastly… and being dead, let birds on her take pity.”
Chris got the first one and he skipped right over the $800 and got the DD on $1,200; Greg got $800 and $1,600; and Amanda got the $2K clue.
heineken a river running through amsterdam…
otherwise the usual fri present in fj. surprised only 2 got it. maybe they should have saved the snl clue from tue for today. although politicians are often funnier than comedians, albeit not necessarily on purpose 🙂
Remembering Dan Quayle made me laugh harder than thinking of Wayne’s World.
glad i’m not the only one who finds politicians sometimes funny, up to ludicrous…except when they announce higher taxes after saying “read my lips….”
Excellent.
