The Final Jeopardy question (4/30/2014), in the category “Album Covers” was:
This band used a picture of the Hindenburg Disaster on the cover of its eponymous debut album.
7-day champ Julia Collins has won $144,910 to date. In her 8th game, she is up against these two players: John Ogden, from Silver Spring, MD; and Mallory Howe, from Brea, CA.
Round 1: Julia found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “The Art of Norman Rockwell” under the $1,000 clue. She was in the lead with $1,800, $400 more than John in second place. She bet $1,000 and guessed Leonardo Da Vinci. That was WRONG.
For “The Recruit” in 1966, Rockwell borrowed the pose of a football player from a sculpture of Guiliano de’ Medici by this Florentine master. show
Julia finished in the lead with $4,600. Mallory was second with $4,400 and John was last with $4,000.
Round 2: Julia found the first Daily Double in “Poets & Poetry” under the $2,000 clue. In the lead with $10,600, she was $6,600 ahead of Mallory and John, tied in second place. She bet $1,000 and she was RIGHT.
The longest poem in “Leaves of Grass”, called this since 1881, consists of 52 sections. show
Mallory found the last Daily Double in “Low-Tech High Tech” under the $1,200 clue. She was in second place with $6,400, $8,800 less than Julia’s lead. She bet $1,000 and she was RIGHT.

The players left the entire Spelling Bee category till last and only got through three clues, each player getting one of those three right.
Julia finished with $21,200, another runaway. John was next with $8,400 and Mallory was in third place with $7,800.
ALL of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.
WHO IS LED ZEPPELIN?
“Led Zeppelin released their self-titled debut album Led Zeppelin on January 12, 1969 (US) and March 31, 1969 (UK) with the image of an airship exploding on the cover. The photo used on the album cover is of the “Hindenburg Disaster” that occurred on May 6, 1937, at the end of the Hindenburg first North American transatlantic journey of its second season of service.” Feel Numb.com has the image before the crop for the album as well as some info on who was offended by the album cover.
Mallory wrote down “Led Zepplin” but that was accepted. She bet $7,000 and finished with $14,800.
John had it spelled right. His $7,201 bet brought him up to $15,601.
Julia also had the correct spelling. She bet $4,500 so she won her 8th match with $25,700. Her 8-day total is $170,610.
After Arthur Chu won his 8th game, Alex Trebek said he had become a “statistic” and that was partly because Chu won $58,200 in the 8th game. Julia needs to win another game to beat Ben Ingram (8x) and Dan Pawson (9x) in terms of money. Are you rooting for Julia to win more games than 11x champ Arthur Chu?

if the #s are right – show has not been on yet -julia would have ended up with 16.700 if wrong and john with 16.800 had he bet all and had been right???? a c.c. by 100.00????
DDs and FJ easy again, yet congratulations and yes, if julia sticks with her strategy, she might be around for a long time. unless she runs into a devil-may-care player, who makes everything a true DD, because s/he had a few DDs before the show…
but i am rooting for julia and we shall see her at the toc.
she must have miscalculated … i couldn’t believe it
It’s a little disconcerting that Julia risked her lock with that $4500 wager… thankfully she got FJ! correct and John didn’t wager all of his $8400. Still, that mistake could have been a sad way to go out!
so she DID make that mistake/risk, whatever???? john is probably biting himself now….c’est la vie.
As Julia had the correct response, John does not have to kick himself.
yes, but as second i would always bet everything if the first is in reach:
1. if i am wrong, it does not matter
2. if i am right, the first may play for a tie.
how often have we seen the leader play for a tie and the second lost by 1 buck. plus, as we have seen, even the best can make a c.c……
what am i going to do with the one dollar i was short and could have had a tie? frame it? of course hindsight etc…depends on the category, am i confident, was there a similar category during regular play and how did the others do etc. but most of the time i think betting all when you can catch the leader as # 2 would be MY strategy.

A resounding YES, in response to VJ’s question at the end.
Thanks again, VJ. Your quick posts are much appreciated…It’s so gratifying to see the updates around 7 pm EST, even before the game airs in our area (referring to the times when I had cable). Keep up the great work.
