Final Jeopardy: European History (4-3-15)

The Final Jeopardy question (4/3/2015), in the category “European History” was:

A 3-letter 9th century tribe is in the names of 2 21st century countries: the world’s most vast, and this one.

2-day champ Kerry Greene has won $42,802 so far. In the last game of the week, she is up against these two players: Pat Kavanaugh, from Chicago, IL; and Tom Imler, from Cary, NC.

Round 1: Tom found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “20th Century America” under the $600 clue before the first break. He was in the lead with $3,200, $200 more than Kerry in second place. He made it a true Daily Double and thought it was “void.” That was WRONG.

WHAT IS BELARUS?

“According to the earliest chronicle of Kievan Rus’, a Varangian named Rurik became prince of Novgorod in about 860 before his successors moved south and extended their authority to Kiev. By the late 9th century the Varangian ruler of Kiev had established his power over a large area that gradually came to be known as Russia. The name “Russia” is thought to be connected with Slavic or Persian roots. Originally Rus was a medieval country and state that comprised mostly Early East Slavs. The territories of that old Rus are today distributed among the Russian Federation, Belarus and Ukraine. ” Learn more here.

Pat got it right. Her $5,000 bet brought her up to $13,000.

Kerry got it right, too. She spelled it “Byelorus” but the judges told Alex it didn’t change the pronunciation. She bet $11,598 bet, finishing with $23,198.

Tom thought it was Hungary. That cost him $9,300 and he wound up in third place with $11,500. So Kerry remains champ and her 3-day total is $66,000.

FJ Results: 4-3-15

During the chat, Alex asked Kerry what the best place was of the 38 different addresses she has lived at. She said she liked the two years she spent in San Diego and couldn’t complain about that, referring to the good weather. We’re sure few, if any, New Englanders would!

CLUE FAIL: In the category “In Life” this was the $800 clue: “In Catholicism, this sacrament, administered on baptized persons at least age 7, allows you to take communion.”

“What is Confirmation” was accepted as an answer from Tom. They didn’t stop and make a wrong answer call during the show but they obviously knew about it — at the end of the show, Alex apologized for the mistake and said they “messed up rather badly in their phrasing.” Fortunately, he said, it did not affect the outcome of the game. He promised they will do better on Monday. Phrased that way, Penance, Reconciliation or Confession would all have been correct answers.

    What a comeback! TO KERRY

TO TOM: Man, you had a nice game, and one clue cost it. Sorry ’bout that, but overall, fabulous game!

  2. VJ says:

I’m still trying to figure out what Tom thought the world’s most vast country is

    • Cece says:

My guess is that he couldn’t think of Belarus and just took a wild guess. Also, he could’ve had a runaway had he answered “Macau” (?) in the $2k clue, right?

Was an almost entire category left on the board in the 1st round? (I watched bits & pieces of the game tonight.)

      • VJ says:

Yeah, there were 4 clues left on the board in the first round under “My Interrogative”.

He got the last DD after he missed that Macau clue, so it’s more like he could have had a runaway if he bet more on the last DD, ain’t it?

        • Cece says:

Yes, you’re right about the DD. I thought the Macau clue was after the DD (didn’t read that part of your recap carefully!).

          🙂

Tom is getting a Twitter Trouncing over that age of puberty clue he got wrong

        • Cece says:

Poor Tom. It’s funny the things contestants blurt out w/out thinking when up on that podium, under lights and pressure. In retrospect I’m sure he thought his answer silly (age of consent at 12 & 14?). I’m almost sure he knew what the world most vast country is, but unable to come up with the other country referenced in the clue, he just writes down anything. Nerves, maybe? In hindsight he goes facepalm!

        • VJ says:

Yeah, scanning the clue quickly and trying to buzz in first — he must have just said the first thing that came to mind to finish off “age of”. And that happened to Kerry, too, with age of majority.

That was another clue in this match they could have done without. I wonder where they got it from.

little side info: in the games on wed and thu the winning bet was 7.001, even though the #s before fj were different, but equal in relativity. today kerry trailed for the first time. that’s why i said “no 4 x champ in sight. kerry won’t win monday. today was already close. tom blew it big time, he was the one who missed when i said 2 max solves.

  4. Eric S says:

That seems like some pretty crazy leeway on the FJ.
lol. So did “Jones” for Ken Jennings.
So close to a runaway opportunity for Tom on the last DD. Kerry seems to have a charmed Jeopardy live.

    • VJ says:

I have seen it spelled that way in books.

Here’s a page where they show cigarettes packs from Russia, Byelorus (it’s spelled that way on the page) and other countries LINK

      • Cece says:

VJ – the things you come up with! What are you doing researching cigarettes?! Just Kidding!!
(I think you know I’m joking, but just in case someone doesn’t.)

        • VJ says:

Yes, I know you’re joking. LOL. I saw it spelled the way Kerry spelled it in a few other places but they looked like family stuff to me so I had to go with the cigarette page.

Hey, I know a French song called La Cigarette. It’s No. 23 on this page, but No. 22 is my real favorite of all the songs on there.

        • Cece says:

Thanks for the link. She sounds a little like Edith Piaf; my grandmother used to listen to her all the time. I liked that song too – Jour de Lessive, though I hate faire la lessive, no, I abhor it with a passion!

        • VJ says:

I agree, she sounds Piaf-esque except she doesn’t roll her r’s till the end of the week like Piaf.LOL! There are several versions of Jour de Lessive on youtube but I like Monique’s interpretation the best. There’s an English translation of the poem here

  5. john blahuta says:

again, 1 player found all 3 dd clues and missed the easiest one.
the cyrillic letters i was referring to in the spoiler talk for the soviet union were CCCP (cyrillic) which stood for SSSR when translated to english or USSR in german or french.
and again, no four time champ in sight. they might have to pp the ToC indefinitely
    if the trend continues.
tom seemed to be confident with the fj category, hence his large bet. he was probably thinking of the magyars. he did get the century right (by coincidence?) but the name of the country containing “magyar” exists only in the hungarian version of the word “hungary” = magyarorszag and only for that country.

HAVE THE USUAL GREAT WEEKEND,HAPPY EASTER AND I HOPE THE EASTER BUNNY HAS A LIMP SO I CAN CATCH HIM….
