Only ONE of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.
WHO IS RICHARD III?
Richard III makes frequent appearances in Jeopardy! clues, often in connection with the Shakespeare play that bears his name. The “winter of our discontent” opening line that mentions the “sun of York” was the topic of FJ! on 3/22/21. The 12/30/14 FJ! clue covered Richard’s status as the last English monarch to die in battle. The discovery of his remains under a car park in Leicester is mentioned in the recap, as is the fact that he was the last king of the House of York.
Since Shakespeare painted Richard as quite the villain, some folks have wondered why anyone wanted to dig the old boy up anyway. Members of The Richard III Society and the Richard III Foundation, Inc. (known as Ricardians) believe that Shakespeare was misinformed. They are also out to prove that Richard III did not do away with his two nephews, (the topic of FJ! on 4/8/15.)
Anna thought it was Henry VIII. She bet and lost it all.
Claire went with Genghis Khan. That cost her $401 and left her with $2,399.
Mattea got it right. She bet $8,000 and won the game with $34,000. Mattea’s 14-day total is $320,081.
A triple stumper from each round:
CROSSWORD CLUES “K” ($600) Carved doll of the Hopi people (7 letters)
CHEESE ($2000) This smooth, rich, slightly sweet double or triple cream cheese from Italy works very nicely in a variety of brulees

This isn’t the 1st time that Richard III was a correct response when Ken Jennings was on. In Ken’s 38th game, which was also the last game of Season 20, the Final Jeopardy! category was Shakespeare, and the clue was “2 of the 4 Shakespeare plays in which ghosts appear on stage.” After Kristine O’Connell-McCoy & Sarah Mulloy got 1 right and 1 wrong, Ken wrote down Hamlet & Richard III. Alex Trebek said that Hamlet is correct, Julius Caesar is correct, Macbeth is correct, and Richard III is correct. As a result, Ken won $75,000, which was his biggest 1-Day win during his 74 game winning streak. Speaking of Shakespeare, there was that Shakespeare’s Tragedies Final Jeopardy! clue about Iago that made Ken Jennings the Greatest of All Time Jeopardy! Champion.
Yet another mediocre performance, with two contestants that couldn’t get out of their own way.
I knew, somewhat, of the story of FI, but still got it wrong. I said “Richard the Lion Hearted”, who was not Richard III.
I remember this clue from Kerry Greene’s sixth game back in 2015 as it was in Shakespeare category. She was the only person to get this right as far as I know. Furthermore Genghis Khan? I don’t remember if Anne of york ever dated that Mongol leader. Not sure why Claire put that down. Still congrats to mattea on winning game 14.
