Final Jeopardy: North American Geography (4-14-16)

Today’s Final Jeopardy question (4/14/2016) in the category “North American Geography” was:

Far from New England, it’s the state that has the shortest land border with Canada, only 45 miles.

2x champ Carter Spires has now won $31,200. In Game 3 he is up against these two ladies: Margaret Miles, from Wilmington, NC; and Hannah Gage, originally from Newport, OR.

Today is the 95th birthday of Alex Trebek’s mother, Lucille. As is his usual custom, her son gave her a Happy Birthday shoutout, and a very emotional one. His voice was almost breaking when he said “Way to go, Ma!” with a fist pump. Happy Birthday from all of us over here, Mrs. Trebek.

Margaret finished in the lead with $32,000. Carter was next with $20,000 and Hannah was in third place with $5,400.

TWO of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHAT IS IDAHO?

If “land border” wasn’t enough to make you rule out Pennsylvania, the far from New England part of the clue surely was. This list on wikipedia shows the States that border Canada from east to west and also shows Pennsylvania with a shorter Canadian border (42 miles) than Idaho (45 miles), The Keystone State’s border is on Lake Erie.

Hannah second-guessed her initial Michigan response but ran out of time to get in another complete response. She bet and lost it all.

Carter got it right. His $12,001 bet brought him up to $32,001.

Margaret also got it. She bet $8,100 so she won the match with $40,100 and she is the new Jeopardy! champ. Carter made a very valiant effort to keep up with Margaret, but she is one buzzing-in encyclopedia! If she got any answers wrong, we missed it.

I think Margaret will be our first 5 time champion this season. Amazingly calm for her first appearance.

  2. John says:

The U.S. – Canadian border cuts through an island in Lake St Clair and one in Detroit River, so Michigan should be the correct answer with a “land border” of about a mile.

Clue Crew concept nicely showcased in field trip to George Ranch in Texas (I had not heard about it before). Alex Trebek tribute to his dear Mother on her 95th Anniversary Of Birth very moving and to his credit as a good son and made me tearful too.
