Final Jeopardy: Exploration Name’s the Same (4-11-18)

Today’s Final Jeopardy question (4/11/2018) in the category “Exploration Name’s the Same” was:

The deepest part of the Mariana Trench & a submersible that went there share the name of this space shuttle

The third quarterfinal of the 2018 College Championship features: Georgia Tech freshman Rishab Jain, from Memphis, TN; Tufts Univ. freshman William Scott, from Los Altos, CA; and Furman Univ. junior Caroline Trammell, from Baton Rouge, LA.

Round 1 Categories: Time for Class – First Ladies – Parts of Speech – Remember Your Music Lessons – TV Networking – Spring Break

William found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “Spring Break” under the $400 clue on the 17th pick of the round. He was in a tie for the lead with Caroline. They both had $3,000, $2,800 more than Rishab. He made it a true Daily Double and said Easter. That was WRONG.

This U.S. Federal holiday is the only one in the spring. show

Caroline finished in the lead with $6,000. Rishab was second with $2,800 and William was last with $1,800.

Round 2 Categories: Time for Class – Locals Call It Home – Superheroes – Blue Books – Architecture & Building – Change 1 Letter of the 5

William found the first Daily Double in “Time for Class” under the $1,200 clue on the 15th pick. He was in second place with $6,200 at this point, $3,400 behind Caroline’s lead. He bet $2,000 and he was RIGHT.

Rishab found the last Daily Double in “Architecture & Building” under the $2,000 clue, with just 2 clues left after it. In second place with $11,600, he had $2,200 less than William’s lead. He bet $2,000 and he was RIGHT.

William finished in the lead with $15,800. Rishab was next with $13,600 and Caroline was in third place with $11,600.

TWO of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHAT IS THE CHALLENGER?

On January 28, 1986, the 10th mission of the Space Shuttle Challenger, ended in a tragic explosion and the loss of its 7-member crew. On March 26, 2012, Canadian film director James Cameron successfully piloted the deep-diving submersible named Deepsea Challenger to that part of the Mariana Trench known as “Challenger Deep.”

The space shuttle and the deepest known part of the world’s oceans were both named after the HMS Challenger, the mother ship of the first global marine research expedition in the 1870s. I’m not sure if the submersible was named after the HMS Challenger or the Challenger Deep.

Caroline wrote down “Explorer.” She lost her $5,000 bet, finishing with $6,600.

Rishab got it right. His $6,500 bet brought him up to $20,100.

William got it right too. He bet $4,199, bringing him up to $19,999. That meant Rishab Jain won the semi-final spot. William joins Thatcher Chonka as the 2 leaders on the Wild Card list.

Final Jeopardy (4/11/2018) Rishab Jain, William Scott, Caroline Trammell

Reversal: PARTS OF SPEECH ($800) Ahoy! Surrender your vessel or be boarded by Pirate Pete!: Ahoy – in the middle of Round 1, Caroline benefited from the acceptance of her “exclamation” response to this clue, after the judges found out that “exclamation” is a synonym for “interjection” in the OED. (Can’t believe they had to look that up!)

A triple stumper from each round:

FIRST LADIES ($1000) This First Lady’s final acting role was in “The Sam Darland Story”, a 1962 episode of the TV series “Wagon Train”

BLUE BOOKS ($1200) The graphic novel “Blue is the Warmest Color” was originally published in this language

There was a question related to the CN Tower and specifically named Paul Mitchell. Paul was a good friend and neighbor. I was hoping to find a video of the question and provide a copy to his widow. Can you point me in the right direction?

    • VJ says:

@Gene, it was the 12th clue of the second round in Architecture & Building ($1200). Here’s a screenshot of the clue.

You can ask Jeopardy! on their Facebook page how you can get a clip.

  2. Albert says:

The winners from today and yesterday are so good that they could make it to the Tournament of Champions on regular Jeopardy.

    • VJ says:

@Albert, whoever wins this tournament will be in the next ToC. So far, I’m betting on Dhruv, the epitome of a confidence, imo 🙂

      • Albert says:

        I forgot about that.

I really meant that a couple of these college players could win at least 5 games on regular Jeopardy against 30, 40, and 50-year olds. They are that good and sharp, IMO.

  3. Lou says:

The challenger disaster reminded me of the 2003 space shuttle disaster with 7 astronauts dead. I feel for the families of that tragedy. Plus, Explorer never had any problems so I don’t know where Caroline got that from. Also VJ, doesn’t easter and memorial day fall on the same season which is spring despite it being a few months away? That should have been an acceptable response.

    • VJ says:

@Lou, I guess the category confused both you and William, but the clue specifically asked for a Federal holiday and Easter is not a Federal holiday.

  4. John B. says:

    @ Nell & Jlane
Congrats for a correct prediction. I was surprised about “Explorer”, since a) it’s in the category title and b) it never was a space shuttle. Nice numbers though, especially before FJ.
I don’t think Caroline’s 6.600 will hold for the 4th WC, there are still 2 days to go. Even Jordan might still be in Jeopardy, so to speak.

  5. VJ says:

Well, that was cool that we got another addition to the Wild Card list. Funny when Rishab got his DD,, I wondered why he didn’t bet to take the lead. Then William didn’t bet to win the match!

Category name’s the “same” is misleading.

  7. Richard Corliss says:

Semifinalists: Hannah Sage, Dhruv Gaur, Rishab Jain
Wild Cards: Thatcher Chonka: $21,599, William Scott: $19,999, Jordan Goodson: $12,399, Caroline Trammell: $6,600

    • William Weyser says:

Which means that Josie Bianchi & Sheldon Lewis II, nobody cares if you 2 are history majors, but even if you 2 aren’t, you still are history. Yes, that was harsh, but it’s all I have to say.

  8. Richard Corliss says:

There are new colleges in this tournament: R.I.T., U Central Florida, Furman, Swarthmore, & W.P.I.
