Final Jeopardy: Symbols (3-24-23)

Today’s Final Jeopardy question (3/24/2023) in the category “Symbols” was:

In math, it’s a rotated V; in society, It’s a feeling of some marginalized or underrepresented people

New champ Alec Chao, a management & program analyst from Fort Lauderdale, FL, won $15,505 yesterday. In Game 2, his competitors are: Tamara Ghattas, an editor from Chicago, IL; and Michael Murphy, a test engineer from Gilroy, CA.

Tamara finished in the lead with $13,800. Alec was second with $7,800 and Michael was last with $7,200. 3 clues worth $3,600 were not shown.

Only ONE of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHAT IS “LESS THAN”?

We all generally learn the functions of the rotated V symbol in math when we learn the basic arithmetic symbols. The V rotated sideways and pointing right (>) means “greater than.” Rotated sideways and pointing left (<), it means "less than." The latter is the correct answer to this FJ! clue when the last part of the clue is applied. It is not necessarily exclusive to societal evils like racism. Anyone who has been mistreated for whatever reason may very well feel that the perpetrators of such actions are trying to make them feel less worthy than they are.

Michael wrote down subdivision. He lost $6,601 and finished with $599.

Alec thought it was inequality. He lost $4,801 and was left with $2,999.

Tamara got it right. She added $1,801 and won the game with $15,601. Tamara Ghattas is the new Jeopardy! champ.

Does the company that produces Jeopardy have some kind of financial interest in WWE? I don’t think WWE is a worthy category for the program.

    • VJ says:

Hi Harry. That’s a question you should send directly to the show. There’s a link to their contact page at the bottom of the recap

Harry, Interesting, and timely, that you should mention WWE. I was watching the Business channels this past week and it appears that WWE is up for sale. The biggest potential buyers bidding are Disney (which owns ABC) and Comcast (which owns NBC). The fact that all 3 Jeopardy contestants gave correct responses in the category attests to the popularity of WWE among the younger generation.

It also has catapulted several WWE stars into acting careers. Some that come to my mind are Hulk Hogan, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, and John Cena. To make things even more interesting Pat Sajak got into the act jokingly on “The Wheel of Fortune” this past week which airs on ABC. He had a contestant who was a wrestler and Pat Sajak jokingly pulled a wrestling move on him. Enough said. 😂

        Good points!
In addition next week on Wheel viewers can win a trip to Wrestlemania.
        Really?
Something is up and it smells bad.

        • Jacob Ska says:

Harry, I think we’re going to see more WWE clues. Don’t forget James Holzhauer is a huge WWE fan. Like you I’m not a fan. I guess it’s a generational thing. To my knowledge 2 states have had Governors who were former WWE personalities. California had Arnold Schwarzenegger and Minnesota had Jesse Ventura.

  2. Mike says:

The Final Jeopardy answer is wrong. The second guy replied “inequality” which is what I believe to be the correct answer, i.e., if you rotate the V clockwise 90 degrees it’s “less than”; if you rotate it counter-clockwise, it’s “greater than.” Collectively, they are “inequalities.” Ken Jennings said that was the wrong answer. The third person said “less than” and she got it right, won the money and the game. Here’s my point: the question doesn’t specify which way you rotate the V, only that you rotate it. That makes (in my mind) “less than” only half the answer for the first part of the question. And I think inequality works just as well for the 2nd half of the question too. Make sense?

  3. Jason says:

And, maybe it’s just me, but, this season, doesn’t it seem to occur more than rarely that”bad” clues are given? And, I can nearly guess that it is the same writer whose clues are so poorly written, obtuse, or just plain wrong (or, at least, questionable). Billy and Michelle should be on that (unless one of those two is the culprit!).

    • VJ says:

It’s not just you, Jason. I see a lot of complaints about the way some clues are written online. The response Ken gave to that Star Wars fuel stumper in TV Lingo yesterday was flat out called wrong on Twitter.

I thought the way today’s last Daily Double was worded was weird, but kudos to Tamara for getting it right.

  4. Jason says:

Tamara and Michael both seemed to be too casual for me. I don’t expect Tamara to mount any type of win streak.

  5. Collin says:

20 clues in mostly Double Jeopardy were unplayed this season.

  6. Howard says:

I really thought they’d all get FJ. There are 3 ways to rotate a V, basically, and only one matches with “underrepresented.” 8th or 9th grade math term?

If the players knew where RM Nixon had attended college, perhaps they’d have known the one not far from Disneyland. Nearly all the other stumper tortured me, except for the $400 clue in Change a letter.

    • VJ says:

I meant to mention that Michael did know the answer to the author of Kon-Tiki. He just forgot to put it in question form. Ken did not rule him wrong immediately but Michael just didn’t pick up on his mistake and the other contestants didn’t either.

I was surprised at the Pennsylvania college TS — thought it was obvious.

  7. Rick says:

I didn’t have the opportunity to watch the Jeopardy game show today. However, upon coming across the final answer which VJ had posted, I certainly wouldn’t have compared an alphabetical letter to a mathematical symbol. Actually, I could see why only one of the contestants managed to come up with the correct response as I certainly wouldn’t have.

  8. Rick says:

Drat. The Jeopardy game time slot in our area was again overshadowed by still another basketball game. Well, I sure hope that such interruptions don’t continue into next week.
