Final Jeopardy: 19th Century People (2-24-14)

The Final Jeopardy question (2/24/2014), in the category “19th Century People” was:

Frederick Douglass said this man’s “zeal in the cause of my race was far greater than mine.”

After 3 weeks of tournaments, it’s back to the regular games with 4x champ Arthur Chu returning. So far, Arthur has racked up $102,800. His opponents today are: Josh McIlvain, from Syracuse, NY; and Sofi Albizuri, from Miami, FL.

Sofi found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “What Do I Stand For” under the $1,000 clue before the first break. She was in the lead with $3,600, $1,000 more than Josh in second place. She bet $3,000, and somehow got confused about the category letter. She said “Virgin” and that was WRONG.

Arthur finished in the lead with $4,800. Josh was second with $4,600 and Sofi was last with $2,600.

Arthur found the first Daily Double in “Oscar Best Picture Partial Marquees” under the $2,000 clue. He had jumped into the lead in a big way and now had $9,600, $3,800 more than Josh in second place. He bet $5,000 and he was RIGHT.

Arthur found the last Daily Double in “Asian Capitals” under the $800 clue. In the lead with a runaway $23,400, he had $16,400 more than Sofi in second place. He bet $5,000 and he was RIGHT.

This capital is named for a religion. show

Arthur finished in the lead with a runaway $30,800. Sofi was next with $7,000 and Josh was in third place with $5,800.

NONE of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHO IS JOHN BROWN?

The quote in the clue is part of an address delivered by Frederick Douglass on May 30, 1881, at the 14th anniversary of Storer College. One of the guests present on the platform was Andrew Hunter, the District Attorney of Charles Town who had prosecuted John Brown and secured his conviction. Douglass extolled Brown as a martyr to the cause of liberty: “His zeal in the cause of my race was far greater than mine – it was as the burning sun to my taper light – mine was bounded by time, his stretched away to the boundless shores of eternity. I could live for the slave, but he could die for him.” (wvculture.org: Address by Frederick Douglass)

“The trick here,” Trebek said, “is to avoid going for the obvious.”

Josh wrote down Abraham Lincoln. Trebek said “that was the obvious and incorrect response.” He bet it all and finished with nothing.

Sofi had Lincoln, too. She also got wiped out.

Arthur wrote down William Lloyd Garrison. He didn’t go for the obvious but he did bet a whopping $10,000, quite odd for such a broad category. He looked a bit disappointed, but Arthur still won the match with $20,800. He is now a 5x champ with winnings of $123,600.

Note from VJ: Boo hiss to Oscar Wilde for hatin’ on one of my favorite poets in “Writers Hatin’ on Writers. “Oscar Wilde said, “There are two ways of disliking poetry…to dislike it (&) “to read” this author of “An Essay on Man.” Far more common expressions have entered our language from “An Essay of Man” than anything Wilde ever wrote.

Ha ha, LMAO, ROFL. I got the Final Jeopardy right, and the great Arthur Chu didn’t. God, what an idiot he is.

i agree with the amount of the wager being too high. 19th century could be almost everything, i.e. any (sub)category. i probably would have bet 4.200. but then again, 20.800 and 123.600…not too shabby either!
in the oscar category i only got that dd because of the “quiet”! in german it’s “im westen nichts neues”= nothing new in the west”, so “quiet” is not in the german title. fortunately it’s one of the books i read in german and english. otherwise the “quiet” would not have helped me either.
