Final Jeopardy: No. 1 Songs (2-18-15)

The Final Jeopardy question (2/18/2015), in the category “No. 1 Songs” was:

A U.S. No. 1 in 1977, it was performed the night before Carl XVI Gustaf’s 1976 wedding to Silvia Sommerlath.

New champ, Stephanie Engle won $21,199 yesterday, despite an FJ triple stumper. Today she is up against these two players: Ravi Subramanian, from Lexington, KY; and Christina McTighe, from Washington, DC.

Round 1: Ravi found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “I Didn’t Come Here to Make Friends” under the $800 clue. He was in second place with $2,400, $1,400 less than Christina’s lead. He bet $1,200 and he was RIGHT.

Ravi finished in the lead with $19,000. Christina was next with $10,800 and Stephanie was in third place with $6,000.

Only ONE of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHAT IS “DANCING QUEEN”?

In 1972, Carl Gustaf, then Crown Prince of Sweden, met Silvia Sommerlath at the Summer Olympics in Munich, Germany. The following year, Carl Gustaf’s grandfather, King Gustaf VI Adolf, died on September 15, and Carl Gustaf became King of Sweden at the age of 27. The couple’s engagement was announced on 3/12/1976. They married at Stockholm’s Storkyrkan Cathedral on 6/19/1976.

“The night before the wedding the Swedish group ABBA performed the first live Swedish television performance of their song Dancing Queen at a gala in honor of Carl Gustaf and his queen to be.” (Unofficial Royalty: Queen Silvia of Sweden)

Stephanie wrote down “White Wedding” (Billy idol, 1982, not a No. 1 in the USA). She lost her $5,900 bet and finished with $100.

Christina got it right and doubled her score to $21,600.

Ravi wrote down “Candle in the Wind” (Elton John, 1974– the 1997 one dedicated to Princess Diana was a No. 1). He lost his $2,601 bet and finished with $16,399. That made Christina McTighe the new Jeopardy! champ.

FJ Results: 2-18-15

Christina is a library associate. During the chat, Alex Trebek prevailed upon her to do her amazing velociraptor impression. She complied but pointed out that it was better when she could do it “full body.” Stephanie agreed, having already seen it that way in the greenroom.

VJ – Maybe it’s just me — I’m exhausted and very hungry right now, but was it Stephanie or Christina who found the 1st DD?

    🙂

    • VJ says:

no you are right — and I was so hoping I could get through one recap without messing something up. Thanks, Cece. This just ain’t my week 🙁

PS — I hope you click through on the info part, and read about Queen Silvia. She is half Brazilian.

      • Cece says:

Awww..I feel better now (just ate).

C’mon VJ, most people doing what you do would make lots more mistakes, so give yourself a break! Yes, I know she’s half-Brazilian; I have watched her portrayed on TV in Brazil and have read about her. But I’ll definitely read your info to learn more.

So..what happened to Stephanie today? She seemed so promising yesterday. Today she was over powered — Ravi & Christina went to battle.

        • VJ says:

Yes, Ravi & Christina certainly had the jump on the buzzer. Ravi even got the maple syrup clue, right? That clue and some others were just whoever gets there first stuff.

Actually, I did not know Queen Silvia’s mother was Brazilian but should have realized they would show it on TV in your homeland.

I also came across a France 24 youtube. This guy, Karlsson, is granted an interview with the King and Queen before they made a state visit to France last Dec. (LINK) I haven’t watched the whole thing yet (talk about being tired), but the part I saw was quite funny. He had the temerity to remind the King that his line descended from Marshall Bernadotte– twice. Seemed like he was trying to get HRH to profess a special connection with the French. The King said there have been a lot of other influences in his line since then, and then very diplomatically, noted there was still a lot of French stuff in the palace. I wondered what Karlsson was thinking at that moment.

        • Cece says:

“Whoever get there first” clues — there were quite a few of those today. Even in my “fried brain state” tonight, I was like, really?

You mean Karlsson, the Hockey player? You wonder what he was thinking at that moment? Do they think? (I know, that was mean.) 🙂

I gotta watch this video tomorrow to see HRH’s expression.

BTW, your and John’s conversation (below) involving Elton John, Billy idol and the lyrics to Dancing Queen was quite scary, LOL!

But I admit I did get FJ tonight ’cause I was forced to see Mama Mia! with a friend of mine whose husband couldn’t be dragged dead to see it. I was just in infancy when the song was famous and my half compatriot was dancing to it. 🙂

        • VJ says:

no, this Karlsson, a France24/English reporter.

Hey, my son got it too. He was born the year of the performance. I don’t think he was dragged to see Mamma Mia though (LOL!).

I’d say “Fernando” is my favorite by ABBA.

        • Cece says:

See, I told you my brain is fried. I didn’t focus on the word “interview” — why would a hockey player be granted a… never mind, lol!

In my Brazilian group we have a friend named Fernando, so we like to sing that song to irritate him.

    i like this FJ clue

    @ jacob
none taken…..when you read my post – as i said to vj- the 2 of you are giving the players too much credit. just because you and vj are above the average j player seduces you into thinking they know as much as you do. they don’t, there are more than enough examples where you wanted to shoot a player for not knowing the answer, or, even worse, was so far off that s/he better should have said nothing at all. with normal material you and vj would wipe the floor with 80% of the candidates we see on the shows.

  4. john blahuta says:

the MAX of 1 solve i conceded.

    • john blahuta says:

making us 1/9 so far this week in fj or 11.11%.
billy idol in sweden?? really? provided stephanie even knew what country we were talking about. she might have thought of norway, but their king is harald V, denmark has a queen and finland is not a monarchy but a republic. presuming she thought of scandinavia at all.
ravi was at least in the right corner of the world and elton john has performed for numerous royalty and heads of state. so his was a somewhat semi-educated guess, but not close enough for a cigar.
i wonder if we will have a total of 5 solves at the end of the week.
i said j will provide clues that are difficult to get this week to make the teachers look good. don’t expect anything easier – from the american pov – for the next 2 days. we might finish 3/15 by the end of friday.

      • john blahuta says:

and finally, even jacob who lived a few years in germany and visited sweden, got it from YOUR clue vj, although i provided the initials of the song in the spoiler talk.plus, it took him longer than any time allotted for fj.
VJ, you and jacob are way above the regular players, who just got lucky to be picked, so you are giving the contestants too much credit.
plus, go outside the u.s. pick a time frame when the players were born and you are basically pushing them into a sinkhole if it were “history”, say something about 100+ years back they would probably do better -or not -(truman,eisenhower…)and if it’s a difficult clue about the u.s. – palo alto- strikeout.
you and jacob should – just my opinion – take the sum of YOUR knowledge and deduct one third. then you are somewhat close to the better j players. although, when it comes to literature -even in the widest sense- i don’t think anyone could touch you, vj!

        • jacob ska says:

@John, it took me a long time to get CotD on Spoiler Talk because I’m not into pop culture. I went directly to vj’s hint before reading your comments. No slight was intended by not reading your comments first.

        • VJ says:

You vastly overstate my intelligence, John. As I have said before, I am dumb as a rock when it comes to math and science.

    • VJ says:

Funny, I thought the other two would get it, esp after Ravi talked about going to school with royalty. But good for Christina, she did quite well in the game.

I guess Stephanie was going by the title, the lyrics of White Wedding are just totally inappropriate. Come to think of it, the lyrics of Dancing Queen aren’t exactly the best fit —

      Getting in the swing
You come to look for a king
      Anybody could be that guy

Way to make the King of Sweden feel special. 🙂

idk what you mean, John, that Ravi was in the right corner of the world with Elton John. Billy Idol is English, too. Oh, and The 70s Candle in the Wind was dedicated to Marilyn Monroe.

      • john blahuta says:

the original, yes. but when princess di died elton rededicated the song to her.
you posted while i was writing my evaluation of today, the “and finally….”
billy idol is a punk rock singer, certainly not the type of singer who would perform for royalty (and he never did). to compare him with elton john ? he is, was and never will be even close. it’s like comparing a corporal with a general…:):)
no matter what you think about elton as a private person, as an artist he is very high as far as the pecking order is concerned. idol-not so much, i think.
when you read my post about you and jacob deducting 1/3 etc…. you would have to admit that i am not so far off.
as far as the lyrics for d.q. go you are probably right. but then, when the beatles performed for a royal gala, john lennon said something like ” if you can’t/won’t applaud, just rattle your jewelry…”
i guess the king and silvia knew them beforehand and approved them.

      • john blahuta says:

        @vj
i don’t think i overestimate you. science and math are but 2 of so many categories!!
