Final Jeopardy: German Scientists (12-30-15)
The Final Jeopardy question (12/30/2015) in the category “German Scientists” was:
Best known for his theories about planetary orbits, in 1604 he became the first to explain how eyeglasses correct vision.
New champ Camille Hooper won $2,799 yesterday in a game that resulted in Ashley Wilson, the second place player getting a rematch tomorrow. Today Camille takes on these two players: Johnny Saunders, from Dallas, TX; and Erik Johns, from Chicago, IL. If she wins, she’ll be up against Ashley again tomorrow.
Round 1: Johnny found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “Aviation” under the $800 clue, with 3 clues left after it. He was in the lead with $5,000, $400 less than Camille’s lead. He bet $1,000 and thought it was Kitty Hawk. That was WRONG.
The National Aviation Hall of Fame was founded in 1962 in this city, “the birthplace of aviation.” show
That ended the round with Camille in the lead at $5,400. Johnny was still second with $4,000 and Erik was last with $3,600.
Round 2: Johnny found the first Daily Double in “Geo-Pardy” under the $1,600 clue on the fourth pick of the round. He was now in the lead with $5,200, $1,000 more than Camille in second place. He bet $1,000 again and this time, he was RIGHT.

Johnny soon found the last Daily Double in “What a Succession” under the $1,200 clue. In the lead with $7,400 now, he had $4,600 more than Erik in second place. He bet $2,000 and he was RIGHT again.

Johnny finished in the lead with $13,000. Erik was next with $9,200 and Camille was in third place with $6,600.
Only ONE of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.
“Corrective lenses reached another milestone in 1604, when Johannes Kepler published The Optical Part of Astronomy. This treatise described the function of the retina and recognized that images are projected inversely by the eye’s lens and then reversed by the brain. Most notably, he demonstrated that concave lenses correct nearsightedness, and convex lenses correct farsightedness.” Essilor USA: The History of Eyeglasses
Camille wrote down Copernicus, who died in 1543. She lost her $1,001 bet and finished with $5,599.
Erik couldn’t come up with a response. He bet and lost it all.
Johnny got it right. He bet nothing so he won the match with the $13,000 that he finished Double Jeopardy! with.
So it is Johnny who will be playing against Ashley tomorrow. It was really cute the way he answered that Georgia Daily Double, and we hope to get a clip of it soon.

I’m very glad they had Ashley sit out a Wednesday game.
Spoiler Alert: they film a week’s worth of games in a day: the first three in the morning and the other two in the afternoon. So, basically, she had a couple of hours to revive herself (as opposed to five minutes ).
That was a horrible zero bet by the leader. His only way to win was for the other two to miss. He won’t last long.
Well, you could see by his DD bets that he’s just not a big better
Yes, but a bet of 201 would have covered the double up by Camille. The main point is that he needlessly put himself at risk to two players, instead of just one.
Absolutely agreed (by Keith Williams, too!).
Yes. I’m in the suburb of the current champion (more widely will be known at 6:30 p.m.)!
