Final Jeopardy: Play Characters (11-15-13)

The Final Jeopardy question (11/15/2013) in the category “Play Characters” was:

In Peter Roach’s phonetic glossary, this alliterative guy is the “best-known fictional phonetician.”

Playing in the last quarter-final match of the 2013 Teachers Tournament are: Michael Townes from Greenville, S.C.; Timothy Stuker-Haines, from Williamstown, MA; and Cathy Bloedorn, from Baltimore, MD.

Timothy found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “On His Presidency’s Secret Service.” He was in the lead with $5,000, $2,800 ahead of Cathy in second place. He bet $3,000 and he was RIGHT.

In 1902 the service began full-time protection of the President, this man whose predecessor could’ve used some protecting, show

Timothy finished in the lead with $9,400. Michael was second with $4,400 and Cathy was last with $4,000.

Michael found the first Daily Double in “Diseases.” He was in the lead with $11,600, $1,800 more than Timothy in second place. He bet $1,600 but did not know so he was WRONG.

CFTR, the defective gene responsible for transmitting this metabolic disease, lies in the middle of Chromosome 7. show

Cathy got the last Daily Double in “Raid!”, the very last clue on the board. In third place with $8,400, she was $8,000 behind Michael’s lead. She bet $2,000 and thought it was MacArthur. That was WRONG.

In February 1942 he wrote that the purpose of his upcoming raid was “to bomb and fire the industrial center of Japan.” show

Michael finished in the lead with $16,400. Timothy was next with $13,400 and Cathy was in third place with $6,400.

TWO of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHO IS HENRY HIGGINS?

“Henry Higgins is the best-known fictional phonetician, the central male character of Shaw’s Pygmalion and of the musical My Fair Lady. Higgins is given more extreme views about the importance of correct pronunciation in the latter, and most phoneticians are rather embarrassed at the idea that the general public might think of their subject as being capable of being used in the way Higgins used it….” (Henry Higgins – Peter Roach’s Glossary.)

Cathy got it right. She bet $6,395 and finished with $12,795.

Timothy also got it right. His $7,000 bet brought him up to $20,400.

Michael just had a big question mark. He lost his $2,600 bet and ended up with $13,800.

So Timothy is the one who gets that last semi-finalist spot. Here are the results of the quarter-finals:

Patrick Dillon $26,702
Anne Baxter $24,801
John Pearson $22,600
