TWO of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHO IS NICCOLÒ MACHIAVELLI?

According to his bio on Stanford’s Encyclopedia of Philosophy, Niccolo Machiavelli was appointed Second Chancellor of the Republic of Florence in 1498 and “for the next fourteen years, he engaged in a flurry of diplomatic activity on behalf of Florence…. A large body of extant letters, dispatches, and occasional writings testify to his political assignments as well as to his acute talent for the analysis of personalities and institutions.” It was during this time period that he wrote “On the Method of Dealing with the Rebellious Peoples of Valdichiana” (1503).

In 1512, Machiavelli’s fortunes changed drastically when the Medici toppled the Florentine government. Suspected of conspiring against the Medici, he was imprisoned and tortured for a short period in 1513. Forced to retire, he turned his attentions to literary pursuits and is believed to have written “The Prince”, his most famous work, in 1513 and possibly 1514. “The Prince” was not formally published until 1532, 5 years after Machiavelli died.

Elizabeth went with 18th century writer & philosopher Voltaire. That cost her $2,000 and left her with $200.

Mike got it right with an acceptable misspelling — Machiovelli. His $201 bet brought him up to $4,401.

Matt also got it right. He bet $37,000 and won the game with $83,000. That beats his previous top payday of $74,000. Game 34 is now the biggest single payday of Matt Amodio’s run. His 34-day total is $1,350,801.

Regarding the final question, I was stumped as I never heard of Niccolo Machiavelli before now, nor of his famous work ‘The Prince’.

  2. Albert says:

This is by far the most impressed I have been with Matt. Matt was answering so many questions correctly to which I did not know the answer. For example, “Bronchodilator” blew my mind. I used to think Matt would not break Ken’s record, but now I think Matt can break the 74-game win streak and the $2.5 million record. Then again, Jeopardy is a baffling and humbling game where Matt can lose tomorrow.

    • VJ says:

I agree, Albert. We were just stunned by how quickly he ran through Double Jeopardy! today. My daughter said Mike and Elizabeth knew a lot of the answers but they just could not beat him on the buzzer.

Seems like they are playing fast and loose with the rules at times. In the category about movie synopses, Matt said “what’s Martian”. Mayim answered back, “yes, THE Martian”. I double checked. The name of the movie is “The Martian”. I’ve noticed this a few other times as well. Any thoughts?

    • Albert says:

An official rule for years is that the word, “THE”, can be added or eliminated at the beginning when answering a question. For example, when answering a question about the movie, “The Godfather”, both “Godfather” and “The Godfather” are considered correct answers by the judges of the show.

Matt was on Good Morning America this morning & T. J. Holmes asked him about some of the criticism about how he responds to certain clues. Matt responded that he follows the rules as written and threw in the mix that his father is a lawyer. I’m assuming his father made sure Matt knew what would be acceptable.

The video from Matt’s appearance is on YouTube from this morning. It runs a little over 3 minutes.

  4. Lou says:

Congrats to Matt on his big win today surpassing Roger’s 77K total. He seems to be getting closer to that 2 million mark. Speaking of Machiavelli, that name reminded me of Machiavelli the Prince a old multiplayer game from 1995 though I am not sure if anyone here remembered that game. Anyway, seems as though matt has a good chance to get another big payday tomorrow. I am happy to see both contestants getting final today.

  5. Jacob Ska says:

Interesting! Matt’s one day total today surpassed another Ph.D. computer science major Roger Craig. Roger Craig, per J!Archive, was a Ph.D. computer science major in 2010 when his highest one day total was $77,000. He is now Dr. Roger Craig. Matt nor Roger have exceeded the one day winnings of James Holzhauer, who holds B. S. Degree in mathematics. These three contestants know how to rack up money on Jeopardy in one day that most people would take a year to earn. Congrats Matt on today’s haul.

    • Howard says:

Roger is one of my all-time favorite players. When he appeared in the Tournament of Champions, I predicted that he would win, which he did. And when they did the Decades tournament, I predicted Ken, Brad and Roger would be the final 3 of the 45 contestants.
So he shocked me no end when he tanked during the All-Star shows.

Matt is now just a few $$ shy of a $40K per show average, far below James but about $7K ahead of Ken’s average.

Final was a cinch tonight, especially given what year was in the clue.
