Final Jeopardy: African Cities (10-24-18)

Today’s Final Jeopardy question (10/24/2018) in the category “African Cities” was:

Also a judicial capital, this aptly named city is known for an annual Rose Festival that began in 1976

3x champ Erik Agard, a puzzlemaker from Gaithersburg, MD, is up to $66,802 in winnings. In Game 4, his opponents are: Hannah McIntyre, an author from Whistler, British Columbia; and Rock Wayda, a bond analyst from Dana Point, CA.

Our inimitable host, Alex Trebek, opened the show by informing us that Rock’s real name was also Erik (or Eric, as the case may be). He was going by his nickname to avoid confusion. Trebek then said that Hannah’s real name was also Erik. That got some hearty laughs.

Round 1 Categories: Celebrating Cher – Globe Trottin’ – Seen on My Walk Today – Name Game – Speaking Words of Wisdom – Let It “Be”

Rock found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “Words of Wisdom” under the $2,000 clue, with 5 clues left after it. He was in third place with $200, $6,200 less than Erik’s lead. He bet the $1,000 allowance but drew a blank so he was WRONG.

In 1934 this humorist said, “Every Harvard class should have one Democrat to rescue it from oblivion” show

Erik finished in the lead with $5,800. Hannah was second with $3,400 and Rock was last at negative $400.

Round 2 Categories: Byzantium & Beyond – Literature – Say the Word – Baseball-Adjacent Facts – State Fossils – the Roles of My Lifetime

Rock found the first Daily Double in “Byzantium” under the $1,600 clue on the 4th pick. He was in third place with $1,200, $4,600 behind Erik’s lead. He bet the $2,000 allowance and said “the Ottomans.” That was WRONG.

Killing thousands the Nika Revolt of 532 A.D. began as a fight involving different groups of fans of these races. show

Hannah found the last Daily Double in “State Fossils” under the $1,200 clue, with 3 clues to go after it. In second place with $8,600, she had $6,000 less than Erik’s lead. She bet $1,500 and she was RIGHT.

This southern state’s capital & state fossil, a species of mammoth, are both named for Columbus. show

Erik finished in the lead with $14,600. Hannah was next with $10,100 and Rock was in third place with $1,200.

TWO of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHAT IS BLOEMFONTEIN?

On the About page of the Mangaung Rose Festival’s website, it says “Translated, Bloemfontein means ‘fountain of flowers’; however because this capital city is host to the annual rose festival, it has been called the ‘City of Roses.’ Bloemfontein, or Mangaung in the local language, is also the judicial capital of South Africa which makes it one of South Africa’s three capital cities.” Cape Town is the legislative capital and Pretoria is the executive capital.

The last time Bloemfontein was an FJ! answer, it was in the exact same category on 1/27/2017. Each capital came up in the responses, resulting in ONE right.

Rock got it right, despite leaving out the first E. He bet $1,100 and finished with $3,300.

Hannah got it, too, also missing the same E. She bet it all, doubling her score to $20,200.

Erik thought it was “Cape Town”. He lost his $5,601, landing him in second place with $8,999. Hannah McIntyre is the new Jeopardy! champ.

That was a lovely, quirky joke by Alex at the start. He said, “Rock’s first name is Eric but he’s going by his nickname Rock” (to not confuse him with Eric Agard), and then Alex continued, “and Hannah’s first name is Eric too, but she’s going by Hannah.”
It was hilarious and more so when punctuated with Hannah’s nice laugh.

Rock had some trouble with the daily doubles today and was unable to get any rhythm going at least and Hannah got final jeopardy right. Although its a shame erik did not win game 4 which means Marty and the other three game winners are still safe at least until we get a 4 game winner hopefully from Hannah. I am glad she won today although she looked very nervous at first about her response. I just hope that there won’t be anymore leader curses after this. We need strong contenders for the toc, don’t you agree VJ and John? Also when was the last time you guys travelled to Blomefontein for a vacation? Rock is not much of a history buff or a music fan unfortunately.

  3. John B./I. says:

Congratulations to Hannah, VJ and JJ. And Erik did not win a game 4, so we still have four 3 game winners on the ToC lit. At this pace we won’t see a ToC till fall……Ironically, all 3 game winners won more money than Kyle Becker, the second of the two 4 game winners.
Hannah seemed surprised that she won today. Was it because she was not 100% sure about her response or did she think Erik would get it as well and “bet her out”?
I also noticed that this week so far one player always performed way below the other 2 contestants…I hope this will not become a trend.

I guess it’s like Jacob always used to say — you need a lot more than just being a whiz in one area to sustain a run on this show. It was no surprise that Erik did really well in word categories — he ran the Let It “Be” category today. Rock did well in the literature category, getting 4 out of the 5.

You are so right. Even though Erik is an excellent player I could just tell that Erik did not have the makings of a 20-game winner.

  4. JJ says:

CELEBRATING CHER ($200) In a memorable musical moment, Sonny & Cher reunited on David Letterman’s show in 1987 & sang this hit of theirs… That was triple stumper?! WOW! Surely that had to be early in the show and the players were simply nervous?! I hope?!

    • Richard Corliss says:

      It’s all Sonny’s fault.

    • VJ says:

@JJ, it was actually the 26th clue chosen of the first round and it was only their signature song. LOL! Depressing! I wonder if someone will tell Cher on Twitter today — the soundtrack of our lives will die with us.

Well, maybe not — I just read the clue to my kid and she got it.

      • JJ says:

Hallelujah for your child! Good for her!
And signature song? With the possible exception to “The Beat Goes On”, that was their ONLY song! LOL!
Last Feb., I asked a trivia question re: what song Bill Murray was awakened by every morning in “Groundhog’s Day”, and as I recall, most answered it correctly, so there are some Gen X’ers & Millennials that are “in the know” about the important and/or fun music from the past! 👍😉

        • VJ says:

Oh, they had a bunch of of other hits — Baby, Don’t Go and A Cowboy’s Work is Never Done and more. They had their own show in the 70s, too.

        • JJ says:

@VJ, I can honestly say that I can not think of one lyric or note from those other two songs that you mentioned. NOW, if I heard them, I’d probably remember, but those titles leave me blank. (But I did watch the show every week… loved it!)

        • VJ says:

yeah, if you heard them, I’m sure you would remember them. I, of course, know them both by heart. LOL!!

“Ride, I used to jump my horse and ride, I had a six-gun by my side” which at parties got changed to “six-pack”

      • John B./I. says:

Yes, there were literally hundreds of songs in that era, but the moment you heard – or still hear – the first 3 or 4 bars of that song you know what it is. At least I do. The same with the opening chord of “A hard Day’s Night” or “Mr. Tambourine Man”,( whether Dylan or The Byrds,) “The Sound of Silence” etc.

      • Richard Corliss says:

If he didn’t ski he would easily watch where he was going.
It was just like Mike LeMoyne Kennedy.
Hannah’s first name is symmetrical: HAN | NAH
The first side is the same as the other side.
